vettecote
Great! If my wife gets wind of this, it will be her excuse to get rid of everything model related. Then I guess it's back to the bars and fast women!...Joe
diymirage
you know what, i heard a preacher on the radio (think it may have been David Jeremiah) make the following statement which i think applies here.... "if you are meant to be hung you will never drown"
Art Anderson
Another health alert from government scientists (also warning about formaldehyde) from today's New York Times: "Styrene is mostly a concern for workers who build boats, car parts, bathtubs and shower stalls. Studies of workers exposed to high levels of styrene have found increased risks of leukemia and lymphoma and genetic damage to white blood cells. There is also some evidence that styrene increases the risks of cancer of the pancreas and esophagus among styrene workers, the report found. Consumers can be exposed to styrene from the fumes of building materials, photocopiers and tobacco smoke. As for styrene’s presence in plastic utensils and other consumer products, Dr. Brawley likened the risk from such products to that of coffee and cellphones — uncertain and slight." http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/11/health/11cancer.html?_r=1&hp In other words, here's something scary without much proof behind it, at least for consumers. Read the ENTIRE news story! If you melt the stuff, or burn it, yeah, it can be dangerous--and that info goes back perhaps 40 yrs or more! Enough of the hysteria! Erik Smith
I'll bet that if you dry spinach and inhale enough of the smoke, it will cause cancer.
Guest Johnny
They took away my lawn darts so I took up modeling. Now what do I do.......maybe try out this new fad of texting and driving?? Took away out daughter's lawn darts after she busted the windshield in my 69 Chevelle!!! I guarantee they were hazardous to her health. That is she had to sit down carefully for a day or two! As I mentioned in my posts, we don't need this kind of vague science with unsupported conclusions to alarm the public.
DRG
There are always new reports coming out that this or that is bad for you. While I'm not totally careless about my health I live life as best I can. Yes I love pulled pork. I have a drink every now and then. I do smoke to much. I drink to much coffee. I work on models to escape from all the doom and gloom predictions. Give me a cup of coffee, a smoke and let me build my models. Thank you very much.
Chuck Most
Give me a cup of coffee, a smoke and let me build my models. Thank you very much. You are very welcome, Mr. Gardner. But I'll pass on the coffee and have a Moon Mist or Dos Equis instead!

ewaskew
I will keep building models and living life the way I have untill I die. I didn't know when I was going to be born and I don't know when or how I will die. Only God knows that. But according to our [great goverment = other humans] if I beleaved everything they said. I would want to kill myself. As for cancer there is an Orange Juice company that says orange juice helps prevent cancer. The reason they make that statement is because the canser society allowed it because that company gave them a million bucks. So go figure. Danno
Is styrene carcinogenic? Only when found in solid form, orange, and shaped like the General Lee. [insert the missing ninja emoticon here.]
Chuck Most
Nobody says you have to choose one over the other. You can have them all! Normally I would, but I kinda screwed my beverage budget for this month! Is styrene carcinogenic? Only when found in solid form, orange, and shaped like the General Lee. [insert the missing ninja emoticon here.] x2 if it glows in the dark.

ra7c7er
I thought people have been saying styrene was carcinogenic for a while. I vaguely remember a science teacher freaking out on me about the effects of burning styrene and breathing the fumes way back in high school. I can understand how breathing fumes can be bad and I understand but that is the case with any fumes. If you are not burning it and sucking in the fumes like 1970s hippy you are going to be just fine.
niteowl7710
If I die from styrene related cancer, does that mean my family has to use that horrible cliche "He died doing what he loved"?
vettecote
So at your funeral your friends talking of your passion for model building say "He had styrene in his blood" May not be to far from the truth!...Joe
