Sully Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Wheel wells look alot better Jeff. If your building it for an early sixty's look a set of pie crust slicks would look good on her..........just an opinion.... Been to two Wally Worlds so far.. nothing. Sully
High octane Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Stopped at my local Wallymart today and picked up a Johnny Lightning '51 Stude. What did you use to remove the paint and will you be using a self etching primer? Thanks.
Greg Myers Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Lookin' wild. Where did those gorgeous front wheels come from ?

If your building it for an early sixty's look a set of pie crust slicks would look good on her..........just an opinion.... Been to two Wally Worlds so far.. nothing. Sully Thanks Sully, I think it looks best with the rounded wheel openings also. Will be trying some other wheel/tire combos, the pie-crusts will be on the list for sure... I'll be picking up any other Studes I see @ Walmart, I'll get one to you if you don't find one I work at Greater PIT airport, so we're fairly close Stopped at my local Wallymart today and picked up a Johnny Lightning '51 Stude. What did you use to remove the paint and will you be using a self etching primer? Thanks. Glad you found one! I use Klean-Strip paste stripper, found at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. on all my diecasts...paint literally falls off on contact! After all reworking is done just prior to primer, I wash it down with diluted Dupont 5717S metal conditioner (phosphoric acid solution), a clean water wash to neutralize, then good old dish-soap & water.
Sully Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Thank you for the offer Jeff. I have two more within reasonable driving distance that I'll try this week. I just might have to take you up on your offer...... I'll let you know and we can work something out. A nice set of Cragars up front. and some deep dish chomies on the back would look kool too Sully
jeffs396 Posted July 17, 2011 Author Posted July 17, 2011 Lookin' wild. Where did those gorgeous front wheels come from ? Greg, the front wheels are from the reissued AMT Depth Charger (Aqua-Rod). Use a reinforced cut-off wheel in your Dremel to make room for an engine.Safety goggles are a must of course! Yep that works well for diecasts, but I prefer a cleaner, less dusty route...chain drilling: snap out the area: Now the hand filing, some sanding, and hardly any dust!
Guest Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 This is really cool Jeff! How'd I miss this? I agree with Sully. I think Cragars up front and chrome reverse out back. How cool would this be to have it cast?

Sully Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Hey Jeff !!!!!!! I found a couple of good pics for you to use as reference.......if you don't already have them. Sully
Sully Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 (edited) If I get ahold of one of these I'd like to try this one on for size. I love the gassers, and have built mostly drag cars, but fell in love with this pic........ Edited July 17, 2011 by Sully
shucky Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Wow Jeff your doing some major surgery to the diecast and it looks awesome so far. I found some 17 inch spindle mount fronts in billet (slot car stuff) that would look killer on here. I'll send ya a link. Nice job so far!
Ron a.k.a. Grouchy Pants Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Oh wow, good idea cutting all that out. Those wheel wells turned out great. What plans do you have engine wise now, blower or anything?
Rick Schmidt Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I was looking at this diecast today myself. It's quite large. Was the 1/1 a big car ?? Seems to me it was near the size of the Diecast Crown vics below it. If its accurately sized I'll be headin back

I like the roofline on that business coupe, must...resist...urge...to modify...roof! I like this off-white street machine too, I think it needs larger rear tires though Wow Jeff your doing some major surgery to the diecast and it looks awesome so far. I'm thinking early HEMI with hilborn injection, the eight trumpets poking thru the hood! I was looking at this diecast today myself. It's quite large. Was the 1/1 a big car ?? Seems to me it was near the size of the Diecast Crown vics below it. If its accurately sized I'll be headin back It is quite a chunk of metal Rick...I measured the wheelbase (5 inches) and the quick Google search I did shows a 120" WB for the 1950 Commander, and 115" for the 1951? Didn't think they were different? So, for a '50, the diecast WB would be right on at 1/24 scale. Donor parts from my parts box seem to work well with it, maybe a Stude expert can shed a little light on this?
crazyjim Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 The gas coupe with the injection stacks out the hood sounds great! That off white street machine is looking real nice too. Neither Wal-Mart I went to doesn't have the Studebaker. I think I'll grab one of the other Johnny Lightning cars and ask them to order one or 2 for me. I tried Wal-Mart online and couldn't find them there either.

Just like the monochromatic look on this one Sully
bbowser Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 After seeing this thread, I had to go to Wallyworld and get a Stude. I also came home with a '49 Buick Roadmaster. Lead sled anyone? Great job so far on the gasser! I'm a little nervous about hacking on metal

Great job so far on the gasser! I'm a little nervous about hacking on metal Thanks Bruce! I thought about the Buick myself, but it looks smallish to me? And don't worry about hacking on a diecast, I feel that it's an easier medium than styrene in some respects, and if you screw it up, they're pretty cheap to replace anyway!
Foxer Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Thanks Bruce! I thought about the Buick myself, but it looks smallish to me? These Johnny Lightning diecasts are pretty nice detail wise for the price and are interesting subjects, but I wondered about the scale too. I'm thinking they are those infamous "scaled to the box" scale. The Stude has a 123" wheelbase in 1/24. Considering the 1:1 '51 Commander had a 115" wheelbase, the model scales out to about 1/22.

Yeah, a tad big, but still useable Very, very nice!! Thanks! A little more tinkering with different rims, and a mockup with the trumpets poking thru the hood The more wheels I try, the more I keep leaning towards the Cragars I did first...
Greg Myers Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 OK, Jeff, if we're voting, I go with your first set :
