samdiego Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 (edited) Oops, I guess I should paint the push bar. Edited July 12, 2011 by samdiego
Bernard Kron Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 This classic always looks so cool. I like the alternate color and the slick execution! Nice one!
Draggon Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Looks good in that color! Great job. Did it come with Modelhaus resin tires?
funhouse1 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Akkk! Another kit I need that I don't need. Great job on it!
MikeeD Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Ooooo...that's just all kinds of cool...nice color combo..well done!
Harry P. Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Ok, I admit I'm totally not up on this car, whether the real one or the model (if there is a real one...) but how is the engine getting air???
Cato Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Ok, I admit I'm totally not up on this car, whether the real one or the model (if there is a real one...) but how is the engine getting air??? Front mounted Potvin blower and two Kinsler mechanical injectors. Prolly takes air from below the open chassis. Yes-I'm that old...
samdiego Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 (edited) Thanks Those are the Modelhaus tires. An improvement over the originals, for sure, but they respond strangely to sanding. I pulled the Firestone decals from the Revell '55 sheet. I've heard that this was patterned after a real car but I can't remember who's. The front mounted blower must be correct. Wasn't the Sling Shot an early Swamp Rat? Edited July 13, 2011 by samdiego
Art Laski Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I have one of these on the bench and found this one looking for some references. What a super nice build. Great job!
sjordan Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 (edited) Ok, I admit I'm totally not up on this car, whether the real one or the model (if there is a real one...) but how is the engine getting air??? Check the ad on page 6 of the current MCM issue #162. Galaxie Limited is reissuing the Monogram kit, which they describe as follows: "Fuel dragsters first became popular during the late 1950s and early 1960s. One of the most well-known of the type was Cal Rice's Hot Rod Magazine Special - its ultra-streamlined shape and powerful Chrysler Hemi engine made it a standout. Pictures of the actual car can be found in the Hot Rod 1959 Annual (Trend Books). Monogram Models based their Long John Dragster kit, one of the most popular model kits of the early days of plastic model cars, on the Hot Rod Special." "1958: Rodders were breaking international marks, including the standing kilo, at a record clip. Cal Rice and his J.E. Riley/Hot Rod Magazine Special broke Auto Union's long-standing (21 years) record of 117 (19.08 e.t.) with a pass of 123 (18.10) at March Air Force Base." Peter Lombardo Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 This looks great.....it is one of the very first kits I can remember as a kid. It is what it is..............and it is a classic.
sjordan Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 In checking out the info at Hot Rod magazine, I came across this page that might be of interest to a lot of our members and stimulate builds "The top 100 hot rods that changed history, " with 100 photos. http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicles/hrdp_0801_top_100_hot_rods/viewall.html
sjordan Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Seems to me that, based on the hardware going to the nose, Monogram borrowed some stuff from midgets.
HotRodaSaurus Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I believe this model is based on the Romeo Palamides car featured on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine for November 1956.
sjordan Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I believe this model is based on the Romeo Palamides car featured on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine for November 1956. That certainly looks more like it than what Galaxie said.
