oldscool Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 If one doesn't use perfect spelling and grammar they are not welcome on this forum?

Mike Kucaba Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Replying and/or creating posts with little or no regards for correcting spelling, punctuation, all caps.no caps etc in my opinion is a sign of disrespecting the members of this forum. No one says you have to do it,but you do it out of respect for others on this forum. Personally, I'm reluctant to really care about sharing any knowledge I may have with a person who doesn't care about this etiquette.

All are welcome as far as I have seen regardless. Every site you will ever go to will have "grammar police" that get their panties in a buch over things. For the majority it isn't an issue. So don't let them get in your head.
Rob Hall Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Proper punctuation, grammar, and spelling are essential to effective communication, whether in writing or on the internet. Also, use of IM/Chat style speak ('u' for you, 2 for 'to', etc) is really annoying....

Monty Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Tell me something, Gerald. Why is it that our Scandanavian members seem to have a better grasp of English in regards to grammar and spelling than some of our native sons? It's a second language for them. And since someone has already played the Grammar Police/Spelling Nazi card, I'll ask why anyone shouldn't be embarrassed not to know the difference between words like there, their and they're/ your and you're/ hear and here etc. Most people had learned to differentiate between these words by the end of second grade.

On the other hand, people need to form at least somewhat coherent sentences to be understood. There have been numerous occasions where people here start debating something when it turns out they both meant to say the same thing, but one of them did so in a way that nobody could possibly understand except them. Internet forums require some basic level of text-based communication skills. There are numerous tools (spell check, etc.) that can help those that have some sort of challenge there. If someone is communicating the best they can, then they're not showing disrespect for others. However, there are numerous examples of people here who post completely unreadable assaults on the English language, then go into "I write how I want, and it's your problem that you can't understand" diatribes when asked to explain what they meant. That is disrespectful, because it shows the poster doesn't care if anyone gets value from what they post or not. Courtesy is a 2 way street on this one. That sure is one way to put it.....Thank-You

Actually if I was picking on anything it was his lack of information in a vague post he thought was being informational. It had nothing to do with his grammar. It had everything to do with him posting a picture of something that was wrong without pointing out what was wrong with the picture and just assuming everyone would figure it out for themselves. All I did was point out what he left out. Quit being a whiney the pooh and build something! Perhaps I misinterpreted your intentions with the quotation marks. I am just an average working class guy who did graduate from high school and I try to do the best I can. If my point was vague to you then so be it. I just hope someone got some useful info from it. I post on this forum because I love the hobby and am growing weary of the nitpicking I am seeing on all modeling forums. gus Edited August 30, 2011 by oldscool

I myself find it quite annoying having to look up what all these abbreviations mean. It's not like you can't spend an extra minute or two spelling it out. It makes it much easier for everyone to read. Okay? Kthnxbai. Instead of saying that, a more feasible way would be, Okay, Thanks, Bye.... Just sayin'.

Wayne Buck Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I agree that some people should spend a little time going over their posts before putting them up, but when it comes to the correct usage of words like there, their, they're, to, too, you're, your, etc.. I think some people get a little too nit-picky. If you can understand what the person meant, it shouldn't start a peeing match. When you talk to someone in person and they use those types of words, you can't see the "spelling" of it, but you know what they are talking about because of the context. I agree 100%, however, that thread titles should be descriptive enough so forum members will generally know what it is about before they click on it. Titles like "I need one of these" or "Look" are not so good...

How would I know about a disability? If I can I always try to help people on this board and in my everyday life. Harry P. Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I'm not going to bust anyone's chops if they use "their" instead of "there" or "your" when they mean "you're"... but seriously, didn't we learn this stuff in second grade??? I'm actually pretty surprised at just how common these mistakes are here on the forum.
