SoCalCarCulture Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Flying is easy if you follow the procedures like others said - it's the clueless who slow down the process. I haven't checked a bag for about 30 years, if you can't carry it on board you don't need it or you can ship it ahead. Those with carry-ons that are too big have to check them. Harry - try flying out of Midway instead of O'Hare - so much easier! ...and like Rob said how would you get to all those cool destinations, like Hawaii, a boat trip takes too long!
kitbash1 Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I don't like flying. I am the worst , I'm a white knuckle flyer. My father loved to fly it was his passion. When I was a young boy I ask my dad if learning to fly was hard. He told me that flying was the easy part, itjust got a little more interesting with a Messershmit or a Foker Wolf up your ass.
Junkman Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Where I can't travel with my car, I don't want to be.
Dr. Cranky Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Welcome back, buddy. I hope things worked out and you got more work.
Harry P. Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 Flying is easy if you follow the procedures like others said - it's the clueless who slow down the process. I don't know how often you fly into or out of O'Hare, but it's not the clueless that are the problem. The problem at O'Hare is the long lines everywhere. I swear, it seems that every time I've flown out of O'Hare, the entire US population was also there that day!

Try Mitchell Field in Milwaukee, you will be surprised at how much easier it is to fly out of there. I have also found that certain times of the day are worse than others. Early morning is much better as it tends to have business travellers and fresh TSA agents while mid-day has more casual travellers and the TSA agents tend to be slower and ready for their next break. Don't get me wrong, I don't fly as much as I used to and when I do, I avoid airports like Chicago and Atlanta, simply because of past experiences and frustrations. You might also want to check to see if you are on any lists Harry, maybe the problem is you !
Rob Hall Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 I try and avoid O'Hare or Midway unless I'm going to Chicago..I used to connect through both of them often...nearly missed flights when it was super busy around Thanksgiving and Xmas...I try and avoid any flight within the US the involves a connection, try and go direct only...
Gregg Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 That's why I loved Clear when it was at it's bestest. It only lasted a while, and is now only at two airports, but it was/is a great idea for those who travel a lot. Scan your eyeballs, check your fingerprint/palm print, and off you go. No lines at all. That was a blast. Yes, I use it, still have it, but haven't been able to go anywhere for a while. Hopefully soon. As for me, I love to fly, but of course, I'm spoiled..... Okay, back to "work"....
charlie8575 Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 I was in Chicago once...although go another time besides March; oh well, that was spring break and one of my closest friends (one of two guys who I consider to be the brothers I never had,) moved there. Cold and windy, but a neat city. I plan on going back sometime, perhaps in the spring in or early fall when it's a little nicer. Dan lives up near the Twin Cities now, and I plan to go there sometime, too. I enjoyed downtown, and there was one day of outstanding weather, so I took advantage and walked around while looking at grad schools. Charlie Larkin
PatRedmond Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Haven't flown since 1999. Can't imagine the chaos I keep reading about with the TSA, etc.
Junkman Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 All these airplanes do is take you to countries where the beer is worse. No bloody thanks.
TheCat Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 Welcome Back Harry!!! Good to see you back!!
XJ6 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 "I wonder how far we can go on one engine?" "All the way to the scene of the crash!"
Qwit Pushin Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Harry, the problem is that you would be flying out of Chicago, one of the worse places to fly from! If the weather doesn't get you, the airlines will! I used to live there and dreaded flying from those airports and luckily I lived closer to Milwaukee and flying there was a breeze. The hassle of the TSA isn't that bad if you are prepared. What kills me is the folks that are casual fliers and get the lines backed up because they do not pay attention to the signs and instructions. A lot of airports are going to different lines for TSA depending on your experience and group that you are in. For instance, I always go thru the business/experienced traveller line because I am. The people in that line know enough to take off their belt, shoes, wallet, empty their pockets and get their laptop and toiletry bag in separate totes. Not that hard of a concept for someone who flies frequently but someone like my parents who fly every couple of years and are elderly, they see it as an infringement on their civil liberties. Not to start a war over rights, remember that flying is like driving- a privledge and if we are asked to show proper ID and ensure that we are not carrying weapons or hazardous materials, then do it without complaint. Well said. I suspect that those who were on board flights 11, 77, 93 and 175 are looking down on us and just shaking their heads wondering how anybody could complain about what amounts to a small inconvenience, when you consider the known consequences the alternative would allow. Just sayin'.
MikeMc Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 (edited) The distance from my house to the hotel, door to door, is 38 miles. The ride took an hour and a half. That averages out to about 25 mph. Traffic around here sucks. But the hassle known as "O'Hare Field" is even worse. So if I get this correct...HE flew to Chicago for the monthly staff meeting...You took the cab ? :P But You could have flown to Hawaii...to his place And a 38 mile trip to the loop ....1.5 hrs..NOT BAD !!!! Thats just in from the burbs today.Could take you that long to park at O' Hare I also gotta agree about using the airport 72 miles north..Gen Billy Mitchell INTERNATIONAL Airport....(they think that's important!) Much quicker any time of the day..Park cheap across Howell Ave and shuttle for free ;) Edited September 13, 2011 by MIKE THE MANIAC
Dr. Cranky Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I think he must have gone and had one of those 27 ounce primer ribs at McCormics? Am I spelling that right, Harry. I ate there once and I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

I ate there once and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We had dinner at Lawry's Prime Rib one night... Stetson's Chop House another night. Glad our dinners were "comped"... you don't want to know what the tab for 4 at Stetson's was! Also made it to the Sox game last Friday nite. But they lost... The rest of the time we were too busy working to even make it out of the hotel, so we "ate in."
