Just wondering if anyone does a body or trans kit for one of these. And if not, any interest? I do have reference pretty close at hand ^^^^, and I'm thinking of reworking an MPC Monte Carlo if I can't find a read-made solution.

Did not see a pic of it on Steve's site, but for 27 bucks it might be worth checking out. Not that R&R stuff is ever fantastic quailty wise, but since I'm planning a conversion it might not be a big deal.

I would think the hardest part would be the wheel wells... If memory serves me, the '78 - '81 were the same body with just minor changes...

I find out about the R&R body first, If i remember correctly, nascar still ran the larger 77 body style then, and I think the body is the same as the 77. I too would like to see any of the 78 -80 Olds, and grand prix, done

Pretty much all the skin is different (if you are talking about Monte vs Cutlass). A Cutlass front end will bolt on to the Monte- a local guy had one, and it looked just as tacky as you imagine! But all Cutlasses did have the same sheetmetal from those years.

Wouldn't mind a '77 Cutlass either, if that's what it is. Might have to email Steve and ask him what's what.

If you master it, I would consider casting it. I am a Ford guy but, have always had a soft spot for the Cutlass. Infact, I owned a 78 in high school.

Same here, but I have always had a soft spot for the Rockets. My buddy Paul still has the '78 he had in high school ten years ago- I never even noticed this body style until Paul bought his.

A few years ago Revell was supposed to do an 86' Cutlass. Someone posted a pic of the Cutlass kit that never came out.

That body style ('81 & up)changed enough to not be of use. You have some work ahead of you if you go with the '78 Monte Carlo that was issued a while back. The tail lights and grille are much differently shaped on the M/C than the Gutless.

Best of luck with it Chuck, I am sure you could pull it off if you take your time.

The only body parts common to the two cars are the roof, cowl, and A pillars. The windshield is the same, unsure of the rest of the glass. It would be a lot of work to replicate the Cutlass.

Roof skin to be specific- the quarter glass and surrounding metal is different as well- I guess I haven't paid much attention to the back window, no idea if that is the same or similar.

Actually, the Grand National would be the better starting point. The Monte had more curve in the quarters, where the Cutlass and Regal were straight.

It always surprised me that nobody ever made a G-body Cutlass. One of the most popular cars of the 1980s, and I think pretty good-looking ones, too.

Personally, I'd love to see one of the bustle-back Cutlasses, just for something really different.

Don't worry- I'm thinking of cobbling up a 'hatchback' Cutlass too.

Main reason I want to use the MPC kit as a basis is because its 1:25 instead of 1:24- that would make it more consistent with other models of its type.

Would the old '81 Chevy Citation yield some of the body lines similar to the Cutlass? Not sure unless I saw them side by side but if you can only use the roof from the Monte, you might be better off just leaving it alone.

Maybe- it would be a TON of cut and paste. The Citation would be better as conversion material for an Omega- but I'm not going there until I finish my 'Cavalier to Firenza' conversion.... IF I ever finish that one.

As far as converting the Monte to a Cutlass, it seems straightforward enough- reshape the rear quarter windows and wheel arches, then use putty to build up the fenders to add the Olds character lines.

Here is a long shot but, maybe try using a combination of the 86 el camino and 80 Monte carlo? the hood, front fenders and doors on the Elky are a little closer to the Cutlass in shape, but the Monte yields a more correct wheelbase, roof, trunklid shape. This would be a lot of work, and way beyond myskill level. As the owner of a 1:1 79 Malibu, 80 Monte and 86 El Camino, I'd love to see more G bodies from the 78-88 era.
