Chuck Most Posted October 22, 2011 Author Posted October 22, 2011 I stumbled across a website a couple years ago that was filled with all kinds of abandoned Trabants. Evidently, after communism fell apart, a lot of Trabant owners simply abandoned the cars wherever they pleased. Seems a little odd to just abandon a car you waited ten years to get, even it it was a total junker!
Chuck Most Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 Interior is pretty much dialed in. Dash still needs detailed, and I think I'll have to reposition the window cranks, or remove them and make it a 'true' roadster. Armrests and door pulls might still be in the cards, guess it all depends how far I want to take it.
matador88 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 hey, i`ve seen one real trabant cruising the street last saturday and this topic immediately came to my mind :> you can really see one on the street sometimes here.. of course, not "so special" like in your bulid..
Chuck Most Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 Cut down a '51 Chevy grille to use, now just need to dig up some bumpers.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 Geez, you are hitting a homerun with this one. Great front work!
RodneyBad Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Interior is looking great and the front end is looking Good.
Danno Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Cut down a '51 Chevy grille to use, now just need to dig up some bumpers. NYET! Nyet. No smiling Trabant! Vat iz dis? A Kommandant Lee? OMGNAGL Thread!!! Zsneaking dis in here! NYET!!! Ve zhall zee about dis!!
Chuck Most Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) No, no Kammandant Lee. (But thanks for the idea... ) Instead of a Dixie flag on the roof it will have a big spike. And hey, you'd be a smiling Trabant too, if you escaped the Iron Curtain and made it to a custom car shop! I would imagine. Edited November 22, 2011 by Chuck Most
Chuck Most Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 And to sweeten the pot, I'm using the 'bad' Revell kit!
Erik Smith Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 You might end up making the Trabant and attractive car.
Chuck Most Posted November 26, 2011 Author Posted November 26, 2011 I was toying with the idea of making the fins taller from the get-go, finally decided to give it a try. So far so good. Next up will be adding shrouded side pipes, and doing a bit more work on the front end. Kinda toying with the idea of a Beatnik Bandit bubble top just for giggles- it would almost look like a mini-Homer. Please let me know if there's a line I've crossed so I can keep on running right past it.
Foxer Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 definitely needed fins! ... Trabant's don't have enough power to cross a pencil line.
Chuck Most Posted November 28, 2011 Author Posted November 28, 2011 Not a big fan of 'bubble' tops, but I'm seriously toying with the idea of grafting the one from the Roth Beatnik Bandit onto this. Yes, I know it might resemble a Powell Homer if I do! Any thoughts?
Joe Handley Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 I don't know Chuck, that car might be too boxy for a bubble top......and you may have crossed that line as soon as you took a saw to the roof of that car
Danno Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 What are you going for, here? A Ukranian Batmobile?
Dr. Cranky Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 A matching boat car being pulled on a trailer would make an extra treat!
Kris Morgan Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 The fins kinda-sorta make it look Batmobile-ish( not sure if that is a real word). Maybe it could be Robin's car. Do you guys think Batman would allow Robin to have his own ride if he was a good boy? Seriously though, love the humor is this one.
Chuck Most Posted November 28, 2011 Author Posted November 28, 2011 What are you going for, here? A Ukranian Batmobile? Nope. East German Batmobile? Perhaps.
Alyn Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 And hey, you'd be a smiling Trabant too, if you escaped the Iron Curtain and made it to a custom car shop! I would imagine. "Custom Car Shop"? This is a custom car? All this time I thought it was gonna be a Chaparral 2J. Couldn't figure out where you were going to fit the snowmobile motor and fans. Trabant custom ??? Aren't there laws against this kind of thing? Common sense? Minimum levels of decency?
Chuck Most Posted November 28, 2011 Author Posted November 28, 2011 Aren't there laws against this kind of thing? Common sense? Minimum levels of decency? There are. And I plan on breaking every single one of them.
