surfjunke Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I just finished rebuilding this for a friend. The chassis was modified from a 1320 die cast & the body is an old junk piece that was modified to fit the chassis. The paint took a few tries, but I am finally happy with the finish. The flames were applied using Bare metal foil & Tamiya paint.
Burnout Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I love it. Very nice. How difficult was it to remove the foil after painting? I've been meaning to try this but I was worried it might be difficult to remove the foil. Thanks for sharing. KB
Kris Morgan Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 That is one of the most insane things I have ever seen. I love it.
crazyjim Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I'm not into racing but this is pretty cool and SHINY :)
surfjunke Posted November 18, 2011 Author Posted November 18, 2011 Thank you very much for all the comments. Ken, I first tried masking the flame sections with friskit film & when I removed this mask, all the adhesive staid in the model! I ruined the paint job removing the adhesive . For paint job 2, I used Bare metal Foil again. The design was cut out on the sheet & then removed very carefully & placed on the model, again very carefully. The masks were very fragile. I removed the masks right after painting, while the paint was still some what wet. That way you do not pull dried paint chips up with the mask leaving jagged edges. I hope that helps.
Lunajammer Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Just so I'm understanding this right.... you laid down the gradated orange first, then bare metal in the shape of your graphic, then white all over, then removed the bare metal while paint was fresh. Correct?
surfjunke Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 Mike, the car was painted white first. The straight sections of the stripes were masked with Tamiya tape. The flame sections were cut from Bare Metal Foil & then applied to the roof. The paint was then sprayed very thinned down in very light mist coats of paint. The masks & tape were then removed while the paint was still wet. There was no jagged edges or touch up needed. I hope that helps.
Lunajammer Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Mike, the car was painted white first. Perfect. Thanks for the info.
Art Laski Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Scott, Very nice build! Is that Bob Meli Race Cars decal the same Bob Meli that used to build and race sprint cars out here in California? Art
surfjunke Posted November 30, 2011 Author Posted November 30, 2011 Hi Art, It very well could be the same person, I am not sure. You got me interested, so I did search. I had no idea that he raced sprint cars from the 1950's right up into the 1990's! He did build & prepare race cars for others as well through his shop. The decals used were from a Bantam fuel arltered drag car. Thanks for asking.
