Dr. Cranky Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I am hoping this thread will start a good discussion on what you paint and normally don't need to paint on your models. I tend to be pretty OCD about it and I paint everything, even when I know people will be be able to see, for example the trunk of a vehicle and under the seats, etc . . . What do you normally do?
Sixx Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I agree with ya Doc, I paint it all, even on some military stuff I've been monkeying with
bbowser Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Primer maybe, but not paint where it won't be seen. Under the seats, for real?
my name is nobody Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 yes. I do paint everything. I do not believe I have OCD. I just feel better knowing that my completed model is the way I want it. boy, you go through alot of flat black doing a model this way.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Sorry, if this sounds kind of noob-ish, but I can't figure out what the title means.
martinfan5 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 It just depends really on if I am feeling lazy or not, sometimes I do, and sometimes I dont
JustBill Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Not me. I can't reason with wasting the time or paint to do so. I guess you could say I'm a logical thinker. Its not logical to me to paint areas not seen. If it happens to get painted that's not gona get seen so be it. Sometimes though I will paint a part completely if I'm not sure what will get seen once installed. As much fun and enthusiasm as you have though Virgil, I can totally see you sitting there in some trance and just going nuts painting everything in site!! HAHA!!
sweptline64 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I always paint everything just to be on the safe side of what will be seen and what wont cause sometimes I think something wont be seen and turns out it will and vice versa so I just paint everything to be on the safe side.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 I sure do, I paint and detail stuff sometimes knowing full well they won't be seen unless I take the model apart. It is a form of perfectionism that sometimes just adds way too much extra time to a build, but then when you get in "the zone" it's all fun.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 I always worry about my headliners and since I've started using Donn Yost's pipe nipple painting stand, I always end up with un painted circle there, so I come back and paint or upholster the headliner.
Harry P. Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Call me crazy, but I do NOT paint the insides of engine block halves...
LoneWolf15 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Call me crazy, but I do NOT paint the insides of engine block halves... Big Sissy ! Lol !
Dr. Cranky Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 LOL, of course not the parts that get glued together. But there are parts like hubcaps and wheel backs that I worry about so I paint them as well.
Harry P. Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 LOL, of course not the parts that get glued together. Don't all the parts eventually get glued together?
Dr. Cranky Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 I've notice that a few people paint their parts on the sprues . . . and I've always wondered how they have to touch up the part when they cut them off . . . I know everyone has their own style of building and painting, but I'm always looking for the repetition in everything. Again, I am OCD which comes from a life of ADHD, etc . . .Oh, Harry, you are cracking me up!
Rob McKee Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Call me crazy, but I do NOT paint the insides of engine block halves... On model cars I don't paint areas that won't be seen. I do on model aircraft though. I have spent countless hours detailing the interior of aircraft on to seal it up never to be seen again. Why do I do it? I have no idea?
Dr. Cranky Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 Obviously, if I am working on build like this one, then I don't bother, but I do paint the inside flat black so that NOTHING could be seen through the holes and mesh:
Dave Ambrose Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I have a hard enough time completing models without painting detailing stuff that isn't seen. We're building illusions. If you can't see it, it doesn't add to the illusion. That said, I did wire the Surfite engine. The wiring will never be seen given the way the car is put together.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Okay, I figured the topic out. I thought it was a trick question No, I don't paint what I don't see. I can't waste paint since I'm cheap Regarding the other question, I touch them up with bottle paint.
MikeMc Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 (edited) IMHO I am ADHD and ACOA not to mention for work purposes I am a CPCO. Is that why I really dont want to paint anything?? -_- Edited December 5, 2011 by MikeMc
LoneWolf15 Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I have always questioned painting parts on the sprues , too much touch up involved ! Not to mention , the marks from the touchup aren't going to be as smooth as the overall painted surface . Harry ...... When you start painting the inside of the engine blocks , please let me know . It's off to the Geritol Asylum for you ! Again !
plastikfreek Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 How do you change the front tires??? Just use runflats....... ...Love the details...........Back to the original question, I paint everything whether it's seen or not....If I don't, it bugs me because I feel it's not "complete"...haha
JustBill Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 That's why I never understood the the molded in valves in the heads of some engines. Unless the only reason is to give you the option of displaying the engine without valve covers!?!?
