spkgibson Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I bought these off of E-Bay both were messed up and had busted A pillers, I stripped both of them , Repaired all of the damage that was done to them, And repainted them the proper factory colors. The first one is 1973-75 Cranberry Red Metallic, The other one is 1974-75 Cinnamon Metallic. I have got on this kick to restore promos for some reason.
Maindrian Pace Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 One of my favorite JoHan tools, because GM Colonnade cars are so rare in scale. Nice job on the saves. -MJS
george 53 Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Great saves,Steve! Personally, I tend to turn off the wall promo's into models. You know, put a engine in them, open the hoods, etc. Yours came out great!
Adam deCoste Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Very nice, I love GM Colonnade cars. I have a few 73-77 chevelle models planned and i would love to have one of those cutlasses.
Greg Pugh Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I've been itching to get a '74 Cutlass. My parents had one when I was a kid. It was that brown color with a white opera top. He put 15x8 Corvette rally's on it with white lettered tires. It was a cool looking car. I'd like to build a replica of it.
Dominik Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Well done Steve! The result looks perfect to me and you've choosed nice original colors. I like them!
spkgibson Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 (edited) I've been itching to get a '74 Cutlass. My parents had one when I was a kid. It was that brown color with a white opera top. He put 15x8 Corvette rally's on it with white lettered tires. It was a cool looking car. I'd like to build a replica of it. I sort of stole these cars, I won the Red one for $25 shipped, And the other one was a buy it now for $34.00 , The paint was free, That I had in my stash for years, There was another one on the BAY, from the same person for the same proce with the box, It was Cream , Thats what the red one started out as,A Cream one, But,I hated the color,And the a pillers were cracked, And the paint was all scratched up, I stripped that one, Superglued the piller, Puttied it, Sanded and primed it, Then shot the color, 3 coats , And 2 heavy Coats of clear, Right after the final coat of red, so the paint,And clear gassed out at the same time, I did the same thing with the Cinnamon one, I just fixed the bad spots,The same way as the red one, Primed those areas the same way,And shot the paint over it the same as the red one, I used 20 year old duplicolor touch up paint, Decanted ,And shot through my air brush, The clear was done with the can, I use the One Coat Testors on everything now, That stuff is priceless, And the results speak for themselves. spkgibson Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 This is what the Red one started out as, Notice the busted A-Piller, And the terrible paint , This is the good side of the car.
Guest Johnny Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 The look great! Always seems to be more of a sense of accomplishment in rebuilding or saving a model than building a new kit. Especially when it is something that isn't a common one! I really like that body style but then I'm one of thse that loved the 73-77 ElCamino and Chevelle!

Especially when it is something that isn't a common one! I really like that body style but then I'm one of thse that loved the 73-77 ElCamino and Chevelle! Those ,In my oppinion were the best looking Chevelles and El Caminos from the 70's, The 71 and 72 come in second , Personally If I would have been old enough way back when these were made, I would have bought a 73 or 74 .
ChrisPflug Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Great colors with a great starting point Always wish they would have made a "Supreme" roofed promo- seems like they'd want to promote the upscale car rather than mid range 73-77 GM A bodies were prime daily drivers back in my high school days in the late 80s- lots of misspent youth spent in a Cutlass Supreme, Malibu Classic, or Regal
Greg Pugh Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 X2!! If I can get my hands on one, I'm going to have to convert it to the Supreme version because that's what my folks had. It would be nice if I didn't have to go through all of that.
kenlwest Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Nice job on those Olds models! Ken, from Lake Orion - we are almost neighbors!
spkgibson Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 X2!! If I can get my hands on one, I'm going to have to convert it to the Supreme version because that's what my folks had. It would be nice if I didn't have to go through all of that. Make sure you use the 77 Monte Carlo roof for the back portion , That is correct for the 73-77 Supreme , Also, Has anyone figured out how to FIX the front bumper and header panel on the 75? That looks more like the 74, The 75 had a completely different header panel, Bumper, And the grills were taller, I want to get that Bandit Resins 76-77 Stock Car body ,And make a factory stock 76-77 out of it when that IMC kit comes out, I think the only changes from what I have seen is fixing the wheel wells back to stock, The taillights, interior,And chassis from the 75 will work in the Bandit body, Also the headlights look alot like the ones in the 77-78 Trans Am , The grills would also have to be converted, Thats not alot of work, I wish these guys would offer some of those Nascar bodys from the 70's also factory stock, I would pay the money for one .
disabled modeler Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 I love to restore old promos of the 60s and 70s body styles....I like the challenge of it. Currently been working on a 58 Ford Fairlane HT from my dads collection but need to find another screw type chassis for it to finish it off was lucky and did not have to repaint the body . Nice work on the Cutlass promos.
