Foxer Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 (edited) I know not that many here are interested, but today Route2 in Charlemont MA opened again after washing out in Hurricane Irene. This is the major east-west route across the northern end of the state. .. The Mohawk Trail ... leaf peepers paradise. A whole stretch of the 2 lane road along the river had to be rebuilt. This is a link to Mass DOT page with more photos. Edited October 28, 2012 by Foxer
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Looks like a beautiful road. And the backdrop is gorgeous.
Terry Sumner Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Wow...that's amazing. I spent some of my youth in Cheshire and Adams. We lived in Cheshire when I was in the 2nd grade and later in Adams for the first part of my sophomore year in high school. Played football for the Adams High Hurricanes! Funny huh? Hurricanes...in n/w Mass! Not too often hurricanes make it there and do damage like that... Route 2 is a beautiful drive. I especially like going up the hairpin turn in North Adams. Brings back fond memories....
1320wayne Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Used to take that route every other year when my high school football team played North Adams. The hairpin is cool.
my66s55 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I've been on that hairpin more than once in the early eighties. It was winter, snowing like crazy and at night. There was no guard rail. It was anything but cool.
Harry P. Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I didn't know there are mountains in Massachussetts! You can learn a lot of odd facts here!
my name is nobody Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I didn't know there are mountains in Massachussetts! thanks. now I have to clean my keyboard off. I laughed pretty good at that one. from the picture, it looks like a couple of hills.
Terry Sumner Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 As compared to the Rockies...they are just little hills! LOL
greymack Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Holy thats a major wash out .I bet the road was weaken in some areas hey?I would imagine there would be a ton of heavy equipment in the area.
Rob Hall Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Beautiful route...I've driven it on a fall foliage tour about 15 years ago when my sister lived in the Boston area and I was visiting...I miss the fall colors of the East and Midwest.
Foxer Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 I didn't know there are mountains in Massachussetts! You can learn a lot of odd facts here! I'm sometimes embarrassed to say I live in the mountains, so sometimes it IS the Berkshire Hills. The highest point in Massachusetts is just down the road ... Mt Greylock but only 3500 feet ... shamed by the Rockies for sure.

The highest point in Massachusetts is just down the road ... Mt Greylock but only 3500 feet ... shamed by the Rockies for sure. Don't feel bad. The highest point in Illinois isn't a mountain. It's not even a hill. It's a "mound!" Charles Mound, to be exact. Yep, that's it. Our version of a "mountain!" Yeah, it doesn't get a whole lot flatter than Illinois!
Joe Handley Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Yea, Harry is right, about the only other area with much elevation change seems to be along the Fox River. Been in parts of Iowa that are more mountanious that this state is!
