Erik Smith Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 I picked this kit up a week ago and was pleasantly surprised - although it doesn't say anything on the box, it still contains almost all of the parts for a stock Del Ray. The only tires in the kit are the low profile street tires - so no stock. That is the only thing I could find that is keeping this kit from being a 2 in 1 kit. Stock steel wheels: Stock front and rear ends: Stock dog dish caps:
Erik Smith Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 Here are the "California Wheels" parts - cool, large diameter wheels, alternator, custom valve covers and air cleaner: and lowered suspension parts with built in disc brakes: The rest of the kit is as great as all three in Revell's tri-five lineup.
Longbox55 Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Sweet. Glad to see it getting reissued, as it's the only one I don't have of the new tool Tri-5s.
rasafyff Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 No stock tires. No sale! Are you listening REVELL?
Eshaver Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I have to go along with the NO STOCK TIRE , NO SALE comment . Not al builders want to do Getto-mobiles .............. Ed Shaver
Erik Smith Posted December 20, 2011 Author Posted December 20, 2011 (edited) I have to go along with the NO STOCK TIRE , NO SALE comment . Not al builders want to do Getto-mobiles .............. Ed Shaver Which is weird - why would they omit such a simple thing? The 2 in 1 kits sell better too - Revell's words! Still is a good kit, but they will lose sales on a car like this. blubaja Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Wish they'd tool up some cooler aftermarket looking wheels.
RickRollerLT1 Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 (edited) Odd they left out the stock tires. I don't recall if the previous California Wheels issue of this kit (yellow box art) had the stock tires or if those were only in the original stock issue... This is a rerelease of the Cali-wheels kit, which didn't have the del-rays stock tires to be begin with. The first 2001 stock version only had those parts, but are hard to come by. Better off getting the '56 Nomad (which was just released this month), and use the stock tires (which were the ones the del ray used at one time) from it to make a stock Del-Ray. You could still build two kits from what you got, as the Nomad is a true 2-in-1 like the last issue was. Edited December 20, 2011 by V-spec
RickRollerLT1 Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Here are the "California Wheels" parts - cool, large diameter wheels, alternator, custom valve covers and air cleaner: Those wheels do look pretty sweet when installed on other cars, but on the tri-fives they look a tad out of place. They shoulda at least put the "20 mags from the '69 GT500 kit on there to give to a more triditional hot-rod look
Rick Schmidt Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Orrrr we could just dig into our parts boxes and pull out 4 matchin stock type tires. I'm pretty sure all of us have at least 1 set if not more.
Craig Irwin Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I wish they would quit putting those ugly wagon wheels in kits of 50's to 70's cars all together.
62rebel Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 me too. i looked one of these over today at the Hobbytown near me and put it back. come to think of it, i've been in there four or five times this month and bought nothing but some paint and styrene strip..... just can't justify another reissue right now while i'm waiting for the Moebius '55 Chrysler, which doesn't seem to be on the LHS radar.
fastram Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 No stock wheels, No sale? Seems a little harsh. We are all model builders, if you don't have a box full of "stock" tires or extra parts, you ain't buildin' enough! Getto-mobile? A little harsh too. At least they didn't bring it out DUB! Look at the current car shows and see how many of the 50's 60's and 70's are coming out with the bigger wheel and slammed stances. Shame on Revell for not putting the stock tire in the kit, but really how many sets do we all have sitting around? If not, check out the guy at the next swap meet with that big tupperware box full of tires for sale, he might just have what you need CHEAP! Let's all be glad they brought the kit back out instead of putting it away for years. Keep the hobby fun, lets build!
Harry P. Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 If the only parts missing in this kit to build a stock version are the tires, then that is a pretty weird omission. Add the stock tires and they could have sold this as a true 2'n'1 kit, stock or custom/street machine. Strange decision by Revell if you ask me.
Longbox55 Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 While having a set of stock tires would be a plus (yes, I do agrre, odd that they didn't include them), it is not deal breaker for me. Most likely, I'll end up building a Kustom or race car out of it anyway, like I'm doing with almost all of the other Tri-5 kits I have. I wouldn't call those "ghetto wheels". They're more a G Machine or Pro Touring wheel.
Guest Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 No stock wheels, No sale? Seems a little harsh. We are all model builders, if you don't have a box full of "stock" tires or extra parts, you ain't buildin' enough! Not neccesarily. Thos of us that build f/s use the f/s tires , therefore, may not have a pile of them left over.
ranma Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 (edited) I agree they should of put in stock tire . with that said if they ever reissue the 66 chevelle wagon,I hope they issue it with stock wheels and hood from the 66 el camino. Edited December 21, 2011 by ranma
crazyjim Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 There's 2 of those puppies under the Christmas tree for me. I won't be building stock, so I couldn't care less about stock tires.
Scale-Master Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 It wasn't too long ago everyone seemed so happy about being able to buy the Chevelle wagon and the El Camino kits to get enough parts between them to build what they wanted. I don't recall any complaining that the Chevelle wagon was a custom only kit. What has changed? This '56 Chevy can be found as a stock kit, (not so for the wagon), why not buy the earlier one if the stock wheels are so important? Seems a bit petty and (as mentioned earlier) harsh to demand that extra parts be included or you won't buy it, but then maybe you aren't the intended party they are marketing the model too? H onestly, were you guys that made those comments really going to buy it if it did include the parts to meet your demand? Why do I think not? For what it is worth, I have built two of these kits (one as factory stock, one as the kit version custom) and they went together very well.
Casey Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 I guess it's a sign of how good we as modellers have it these days, that people still find a way to complain about a kit missing stock wheels and tires because that's how they want to build it. I bet a dozen members have a set of stock '56 tires and hubcaps in their parts boxes and would gladly trade them for the aftermarket wheels and tires. As Mark hinted at, perhaps Revell has done some research and marketing and found most people don't want to build this kit stock, and that's why they omitted the stock wheels and tires.
ranma Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 (edited) In my own defence I have bought both 66 wagons and el camino as big lots had the wagon for 6.99 I had to buy the el camino to get the stock parts thats how revell makes more money Edited December 21, 2011 by ranma
Casey Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 One could also look at the glass being half full and say Revell gave us a two all-new kits of the '66 Chevelle wagon and a '66 El Camino.
promo55 Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 As I mostly build showroom stock, the fact that the '56 does not have stock tires in it does not bother me. I got plenty in my parts stash. I do not have any issues of that car as yet, but I will buy this one, at least Revell included the stock hubcaps, rims, and tires in this reissue.
Edsel-Dan Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 This is not the first time Revell has issued a kit with only Stock tires missing to be a 2n1 kit I have the Lowrider issue of the 59 Impala convertible & 65 Hardtop & Both have all the Stock suspension/rims/hubcaps, but No tires for them. I dug out a set of AMT Square wall Firestone's for the 65 and have used the 2 59's for parts. Yes, I am always looking for a stash of Stock tires, but Can make due with what I have till I can find the exact set I want.
Greg Myers Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 I have to go along with the NO STOCK TIRE , NO SALE comment . Not al builders want to do Getto-mobiles .............. Ed Shaver I must agree.
