James2 Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Inspired by an internet build, this will be a little different. Starting with an AMT/R2 33 Willy's won as a door prize at the Derby Shoot out this year. I removed the fenders first. I had to remove part of the interior to get the body down. Mock up with some big and little's from a 32 Ford. Modification to the frame, springs and a cobbled front axle from the part box. The styrene rod is temp. to add some strength for now. That's a FRW QC piece
BOSWELL891 Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Cool i also got this kit at that same contest
Ryan S. Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Nice, this should make a coo looking hot rod! So far, so good!
Greg Pugh Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I've never seen one done like this before. I'll be watching.
James2 Posted December 21, 2011 Author Posted December 21, 2011 I've never seen one done like this before. I'll be watching. I said the same thing, Then knew I had to build one!
Duntov Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 VERY creative!!! This provides so many great ideas!!! I will be watching this one as you progress.... nice craftsmanship!!! Regards Bill (Duntov)
gray07 Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 Cool project, never seen one built this way.
bobthehobbyguy Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I seen an actual car that this was done to. Also seen some magazine articles showing it. Great start. bobthehobbyguy
Guest Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I already like this one and it's just mocked up!! What are your plans for the engine?
James2 Posted December 22, 2011 Author Posted December 22, 2011 Thanks guys. I have hinged the trunk and I'm gonna try a tilt hood next. Fir that reason I am leaning towards the kit motor. It should fit just fine, but will be a little higher due to the lowering of the body. I'm also thinking of leaving the roof open and doing a custom interior. Thanks again, James.
Nate Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Man, it looks a lot better without the fenders! Great idea!
crazyjim Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Different and interesting. I'll be watching.
deathskull59 Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 very cool a high boy willys i actrully did the same exact thing to my 41 willys. turned it rite in to a high boy hot rod that i called the hot knife. it didint even have a front end on it at all and it was an old kit but that did give a good idea though. it was metalic purple pearl and black flames. and a black dagger stripe that started at the roof and went down to a fine point at the rear.
deathskull59 Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 i used to have car model but dont got it no more my sister brocke it.
James2 Posted December 24, 2011 Author Posted December 24, 2011 The kit motor will work but the tranny had to go. This one is from from the 32 5 window kit. I also used the seat. Then added a new shelf. And the handles/cranks from the same kit. Some half round styrene... More to come, thank you for looking. J2
James2 Posted January 8, 2012 Author Posted January 8, 2012 (edited) After test fitting the engine again I realized it was way to big. So I completed it any way just to display it on the shelf. Then I started with a fresh 302 from the Revell 32 Ford and the blower from an AMT 57 Corvette Gasser. Modified the intake some and made some motor mounts. It fits much better. I also decided to use the rear end from a Sprint Car kit, just added some shock mounts. Hinged the hood and now on to the body work and engine assembly. I hope to do a two tone paint job, silver sides and clear red top, like the display engine. Thanks for looking. Edited January 8, 2012 by JAMES2
Harry P. Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Cool project. I like it, something a little different from the everyday Willys we always see.
jbwelda Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 man that is looking really nice. cant hardly even recognize any Willys there but that will probably change with paint. kool idea!
W-409 Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 Very nice and different Willys project. Interesting to see, how it turns out, since I haven't seen these built. Good idea too of building true Hot Rod from this. I was just thinking, if it would look good with the grill only, so it would be saw off from that hood? But it looks very good like this also, keep it going.
James2 Posted January 12, 2012 Author Posted January 12, 2012 Thanks guys. I'm not settled on the grill myself. I tried adding some styrene rod, but was not happy with it. I am going to dig through the parts box next and see what I can do. I'll not cut unless I have to, there is always the grill decal!
James2 Posted January 29, 2012 Author Posted January 29, 2012 I managed to find a PH grill from "The Model Car Garage" So I think that problem is solved. I got the base colors on the body and will attempt to finish that soon. The engine is ready to install and the interior is mostly finished. Just some T-up.
