Keef Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 yeah, ive never seen a ford or gm product with enough horsepower and torque to explode a tranny like that
Joe Handley Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Well, it was a Max Wedge or a Hemi in that car, it was bound to happen sooner or later. I seem to remember finding a pic or something of a built SRT-8 Grand Cherokee that had what was supposed to have a built 4L80-e do that...at idle in the pits at a drag strip.
RodneyBad Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 So your saying doing a 6G Neutral to Drive shift is Bad?? Mmmm, Who would've thought?
Sport Suburban Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Never had anything like that happen in my wagon. But I have snapped two axles and three driveshafts!!
Joe Handley Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Wonder if that car left the ground when it blew?!
timc Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Dangit,I told you to tighten up the wiggle pin before you put in the wobble shaft. Never saw the other brands have enough power to make one go kablewey like that.bigtim
slantasaurus Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Chrysler actually issued a technical bulliten to all of their factory racers telling them they could lose factory support if they didn't stop the practice of "Neutral drop" launches. Double D is right about the sprag failure too, that is why you can now get a bolt in sprag conversion to replace the factory press fit sprag. the Torqueflight transmission is a tough piece, imagine what the damage would be like if it were a Powerglide, C4, or Turbo 350.
Joe Handley Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Knew a guy in HS who's brother had a Toyota Nova and had a habit of doing that, don't think those transmissions faired any better, or why his folks kept getting it fixed on their dime either............
FASTBACK340 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 That's a `64 Dodge. Cast iron Torqueflite.... brittle.
Jon Cole Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 And several decades later, their fwd keep the tradition alive.
Chuck Most Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Those don't explode, though. They just sort of cease to work after a while.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 yeah, ive never seen a ford or gm product with enough horsepower and torque to explode a tranny like that I have.
caine440 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Cute. That photo is been around the block many times. The 727 is one of the few trans that can take that abuse up to a point. Try it in a hondaoyta and see what happens. If you can find one making that kind of H.P.
heatride Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Well I don't know much ,but even the old Cajun knows thats one heck of a mess...
VW Dave Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I seem to remember finding a pic or something of a built SRT-8 Grand Cherokee that had what was supposed to have a built 4L80-e do that...at idle in the pits at a drag strip. I remember that too, it made the rounds on the web pretty fast after it happened....to say that GM tranny got 'brutalized' is putting it mildly.
VW Dave Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 neutral drop starts were becoming the "in" thing to do to try and get manual transmission launches from automatic cars. take pretty much any car with an automatic trans and see how many times you can do that before it fails, My late mother bought her '79 Lil Red Express from the original owner in 1981, and we later found out he was famous for his 'neutral drop' burnouts; when the 727 was given a good going-through a few years later by a local AT guru, she was informed that 1st gear was about shot.....the truck barely had 27K on the clock at that point.
disabled modeler Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I use to own a beefed up 75 Trans Am with a Fairbanks TH-400 manual valve body blew it apart going from first to second once...miss that old car.
moparmagiclives Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Is that the flex plate still bolted to the torque converter ??? Impressive !!!
Junkman Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Is that the flex plate still bolted to the torque converter ??? Impressive !!! I was thinking the exact same thing. Imagine the torque required for that.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Try it in a hondaoyta and see what happens. If you can find one making that kind of H.P.
moparmagiclives Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Nope !!! he's all ready across the finish line
Junkman Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 (edited) Yes, it can: Edited December 27, 2011 by Junkman
moparmagiclives Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 even worse then the fact that it is the flex plate and torque converter still bolted together is that it also has the end of the crankshaft still attached as well, which means that engine is broken too. if you think the damage in the pic at the beginning of this post is spectacular, look up some vintage pics of clutch explosions No thank you, Had a 5.0 at UTI loose the clutch in the dyno room. It was at a diff campus, but we all got to hear about it and sign a card for the kid who lost his leg.
Johnag4004 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 yeah, ive never seen a ford or gm product with enough horsepower and torque to explode a tranny like that I blew the gearbox in my old Ford Capri 1:6GL, going down the road with smoke and cogs spewing out...
