Bruno Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 When I was a kid, my father had a Sunoco service station, and we had a nice '78 Dodge Towing truck. I just finished a replica of it. I have no pics of the real truck, but I do remember well how it looked like. I still remember the address and phone number of the garage. The truck was always kept clean inside and out, but not the engine bay and chassis... So I did some weathering there... I used the old Revell Lenny's Towing GMC truck kit, along with AMT's Lil Red Express truck kit , printed my own decals, and added a few details here and there... It is not an exact replica, but it did look somewhat like this;
Harry P. Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Very nicely done! You might want to post this in the Trucks section, too.
bbowser Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Cool wrecker! I see a lot of this vintage Dodges in these parts in various states of decay. Great replica.
BOSWELL891 Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Nice wrecker, im working on a 77 GMC wrecker right now
Eshaver Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Now there is one truck you never see. Dodges built during that era had a problem with the front ends being too light . I remember having to install a extra heavy push bumper to counteract the weight differential when I was sub contracting Holmes wrecker bodies . Meanwhile ,nice work on the wrecker . Ed Shaver
diymirage Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 looks great i am actually planning on buying a tow/plow truck in a few years, when my boy is 4 or 5 so that we can hit the road before school in the winter and help some people out seems like a great way to teach him some responsibility, servantude and just plain spend some time with him right now he doesnt care much for it yet, earlier today we were out cruizing and we stopped to help pull a ricer out of the ditch, there was allready a cruiser and another guy there so we just lifted it up and set it back on the road took a whole 3 minutes but by the time i got back to the car my boy had fallen asleep best part of the whole ordeal, when the kid rolled down his window to thank everyone before pulling out the cop told him "just find a parking lot and learn how to drive in the snow"
rmvw guy Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Great subject matter and good story to go with it. I really like the decals and that you were able to convincingly re-body the truck. Very nicely done!
Maindrian Pace Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Absolutely fantastic. I remember these well, and this build is proportionately right on. -MJS
Patrick2005 Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Awesome build! Also like how you used the Lil Red's stacks as side pipes.
W-409 Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 This is cool. I haven't seen much of these Wreckers built, but maybe needs to get one GMC Wrecker from Revell, even if it is simple kit. Nice paint you have, and detailing all over is great. It looks just like real cars do. Thanks for sharing.
John Teresi Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Bruno.......ABSOLUTELY stunning build.........I really like this one.......very cool.
Bruno Posted January 2, 2012 Author Posted January 2, 2012 Thanks everyone! Here's some build pics; Kits used Mods done to the bed. Later I did some mods to the upper part too, not shown on those pics I also made 2 tool box doors, one for each side, which I later glued on the bed's quarter panels Modified chassis First mock up.
realgone58 Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Very cool.........I remember Joe's Sunoco where I grew up. Old Joe used to let us kids use the pit and change our oil, plugs, etc. Great memories. Still dig the Sunoco blue and yellow.
Maindrian Pace Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Nice job Dodge-ifying the bed side contours, I was wondering if you did something there. It really came together nicely. -MJS
