majel Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 How long do I need to let my wet coat of testors lacquer cure before I use their one coat wet look clear? This is my first attempt at using a clear coat, and I'm not sure if it needs to cure days, hours or just when to apply the clear.
Rob McKee Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 I usually let it dry for at least a day and then polish the paint out before i apply the clear coat. This is great paint. I have only had good experiences with this stuff.
High octane Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Most of my paints are metallics or flakes so I don't polish out the color coats but only the clear which I spray about a day after the color goes on. I usually let the clear coats "gas out" for a couple of weeks or so before polishing.
Austin T Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I wish I could say I have had good experiances with one coat,Sadly most of my can's have taken flight across the street.Once I got one three lawns away!
Chuck Most Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I usually wait a day (24 hours or so in other words) before applying clear- I've found that in most cases if you spray the clear earlier than that, the clear will end up drying to more of a semi-gloss sheen.
Rob McKee Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 hmmm, looks like I am wasting my time trying to polish out the color coat. I'll give it a go next time to drop the clear right on after color. I think it is still best to let the paint cure before clear though, But then again, I was wrong before.
Rob McKee Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 If it works then don't fix it. Paint is a wierd thing. You can shoot paint and get the same results 50 times then the 51rst time it doesn't work. I guess we all stick to what worked for us.

This is my first attempt at using a clear coat, and I'm not sure if it needs to cure days, hours or just when to apply the clear. Keep in mind that when you spray the clear it may look somewhat milky looking, don't panic, it will dry clear. I also wait at least 24 hrs after spraying my color coat. I personally love the stuff. majel Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 Thanks guys for the replies, since the general consensus seems to be at least 24 hours after work tomorrow I will try the clear coat. Is it like the color coat- a few mist coats and then a heavy coat, or is it truly a "one coat" clear?
Dave Ambrose Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 i havent waited, mostly because i'm hoping that i get a good chemical bond between the primer, color and clear. i could be wrong in that practice however. More time between coats shouldn't be a problem. The solvents in lacquer will bond it to the coat underneath no matter how dry it is. unlike enamels, lacquer doesn't "skin over". It uniformly dries.
Fabrux Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 This clears up some concerns I was having with the One Coat. I used to spray the clear within hours of spraying the colour and ending up with a semi-gloss sheen. Now I know better!
Chuck Most Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 If the gloss comes out somewhat dull, you can wait a day or two and spray a few more fresh coats of clear on it and that should restore the shine. The other thing to keep in mind is humidity. This paint seems VERY sensitive to humidity. All paints are to a degree, but the One Coat line seems particularly sensitive to it..
martinfan5 Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Testor one coat clear is great, I always had great results with it, I have been using MM ultra lear lately, but I think had better results witht the one coat.
MikeMc Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I shoot mainly Tamiya..They recommend a 15 min window between color coats, and the same for TS13 clear, or WAIT 72 hours to prevent cracks. I have always shot all lacquers with this window, and never had any issues....Thanks to Zoom Zoom and Pete Johnson
