brett Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Wait what ? found a pic that inspired me online the other day so started the hacking and wacking business again. Revell 69 yenko and AMT 65 chevelle. Had to cut a wedge outta the wagon roof but it fits pretty good. Will be using all the camaro running gear, just need to do some interior modding and just for a giggle on the pro st cuda chassis
tjones87 Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 looks like an interesting build...will be watching this one for sure
diymirage Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 wasnt there a longroof firebird at one point ?
crazyjim Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 A Camaro station wagon? Yes- I'll keep watching.
espo Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 This looks like it will be interesting. Please keep the pictures coming.
peter31a Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I love longroofs! Love the concept. I'll be watching this one. Keep goin' Brett!
Abell82 Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I am curious to see what you do with the tailpanel, and taillights. I know I'll take some heat for this, but it's not like I've never taken heat before so... You know the thing I HATE about phantom wagons? When the people making them leave the stock taillights, in what would now be an opening tailgate. That's my single greatest pet peave. (Has any automaker EVER done that in a production car? ) It's like here is my great idea, ... but I ran out of juice when crunch time came. So instead of a GREAT design it's just a half baked, conversion. I say this, not to be dejective but to help people understand why MOST wagon conversions don't do much for me. The problem with a 1969 Camaro wagon is the tail panel is one of the draws to the car. (For me anyway) Changing the tail panel and still maintaining the visual flow of an iconic design now thats a challenge. At any rate it's still a W.I.P. I am watching... I am waiting... impress me.
Hoosierfarmboy Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I'm a longroof fan. Neat idea. My current project is a 65 Chevelle 300 wagon (Flintstone body). Will be powered my a much modified straight 6. May use this your in the future.
brett Posted February 6, 2012 Author Posted February 6, 2012 Thanks guys, this oughta keep me motovated Jason, I dont know if I'll be abale to impress you, but I'm willing to give it a go . Now I know the camaro's tail light panel is pretty iconic (not sure thats the right word ), but its not going to work on a car that if the tail gates laid down cause they wont be seen. I have a couple ideas that I'll be trying out so no its not an after thought, just a I'll get to it soon thought lol.
geetee66 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 If you had decided to do a road car, I would've thought it was a cool idea. Now I see the massive engine and fat slicks, I reckon it's sub-zero! Fantastic! How about cutting the rear part to align with the tailgate and trim any shut lines with chrome?
doggie427 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 (edited) wasnt there a longroof firebird at one point ? AIRFIX made a 1/24th version of the Firebird s.w. concept car Edited February 6, 2012 by doggie427
CorvairJim Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I once built a Corvair wagon using the same '65 Chevelle wagon roof. I solved the tailgate problem by simply making it a hatchback! Think about the large glass hatch on a Volvo P1800ES (one of the most beautiful station wagons of all-time, in my opinion) and you'll have the general idea. That model sort of died many years ago (I built it in the late 70's), but I have another similar build in the works that's kind of stalled at the moment because of other projects. I raised the beltline at the quarter panels a little on mine by adding a narrow wedge and squared up the bottom of the quarter windows on mine.
Modellpularn Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Interesting project you got there Brett! As for taillights, I was tinkering with some AMT '69 Chevelle kits the other day. The kits have some funky looking custom taillights. They are molded in red plastic, and are supposed to fit in an equally funky bezel.... Anyway, if you have that kit, or can get one from a mate, give them a try. Just the red plastic bits. They have a flat side, and a slightly curved other side. Maybe 1 cm tall, if you stand them on end. If you can't find any, I'd be happy to send you a pair.
brett Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 Thanks guys, found some tail lights that fit well but it kinda reminds me of a pacer lol
brett Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 The wife was away for the weekend (yay) with the camera (boo) so I quickly snapped a couple of pics last night. Most sub assembly's are done, actually most of its together need to re-mask and respray the white on the roof and figure out some hinges (not working, too lazy for that )for the tailgate. Still have a little work on the tailgate area all round, but most of its pretty close to being glued together
Bartster Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 That's one of the coolest grocery getters ever. Love the 2-tone, looks like something the "hot Mom" would drive!
