Gregg you are exactly right how this works and breaks down, i have worked for the postal service for 29 years now and work in the office of my delivery and without fail i have mine a week to 10 days later then most here... this also happens with my other mags big circulation or not, not to many builders in the area get the mags i get and such as it is mine goes through multiple avenues before it reaches me, I have been lucky so far knowing how it works that i have only had one Model Cars mag get mutilated since i subscribed years ago.Thanx again for the great publication and keep up the great work....

P.S. hows the back doing? hope your doing better and Aloha to your family...

That's right, Tom, I forgot you were PO for a long time. Kelly's dad retired after 50 years. I don't think he missed a day of work!

As for the back, no comment, but will update soon.

Bill, I will have the office look again into the bags, but last time it was too much.

I always listen to the criticism, comments, and such, it's the sarcasm from some (not you my friend), that really gets me going at times.

We may be able to the extra cover, will have to look into that.

There's a lot going on, so let's hope for the best.

I like that idea. Years ago, my grandfather subscribed to Gas Engine Magazine, and it came with a second, plain cover over the regular cover. It protected the rest of the magazine pretty well, and if you left it on it protected the magazine for years after it was delivered.

I upgraded my subscription of Mopar Collector's Guide to the 'premium' level, that has it in a bag for delivery to my house. That stopped the torn covers and also the delivery now gets to my house within the same time frame that it arrives at my brother's house. Seems the plastic bag stopped it from getting passed around the post office. Now I only subsribe to magazines that give me a big discount to do so, otherwise I would rather get them at the store, luckily I have that option. Ever since Hemming's Muscle stopped placing their magazine in a bag the delivery time has increased by about 1 week and luckily only 2 times a year or so I need to request a new issue due to damage.

???

I've subscribed to Hemmings Muscle Machines since day 1, and I don't remember it ever coming in a plastic bag. And it has never arrived damaged, not even once.

On a different note, same topic....

Why is it all the junk-mail arrives in perfect condition? I regularly receive booklet flyers from guitar center that are taped at the top & bottom. Always arrive in mint condition. Same with everything else I re-cycle when it arrives....

But to be honest Gregg, mine always arrives with some damage too. Just not worth complaining about something once it leaves your possession. That is without bagging everything and raising subscriptions to $8 an issue.

There's an old saying about having your cake...

I seem to remember bags way back in the begining, but I just received the latest Shelby issue totally unmolested.

If the reasom for the damage is how Gregg explained (the way the PO routes certain mail), then there's nothing the publisher can do. They can't make the USPS change their system, and apparently it's their system that's causing the damage.

I know it's a hassle, but at least GBP offers to mail a replacement copy if yours is damaged... even though GBP didn't cause the problem. It's frustrating to get a magazine all chewed up, but aside from bagging each magazine (an expensive thing to do)... there's not much we can do.

Bagging the magazine would mean extra costs for GBP. I'm guessing they would pass whatever cost on to the subscriber. Not sure how a higher subscription rate (if it included bagged delivery) would fly with people.

That is the problem Harry, some people wouldn't mind paying extra for a bagged copy while others would, so how do you handle that? I am sure GBP doesn't want to bag some and not all of the mags, right? Besides, for the handful that get their magazines so tattered that a replacement is necessary, what does it cost for GBP to send out replacements versus bagging all subscriptions?

I hate getting a tattered magazine as much as the next guy but unless the magazine is unreadable, what is the point of getting a replacement, it is not likely that I will be able to sell these to fund my retirement in 20 years!

Quick question/thought regarding the condition of the covers etc. I stopped almost all subscriptions to model magazines about 10 years ago for that reason, I got tired of scuffed and torn covers.

I know you mentioned earlier the numbers game. Many magazines I have read in the past would certainly prefer me to be a subscriber because it adds to the "circulation" number which equates to rates they charge for add space etc. Does the number of magazines that a Hobby Shop gets add to your subscription rate any different than say a book store would? (which I assume to be zero for circulation count)

The reason I ask is this, I usually buy my ModelCars Mag from my local Hobby Shop in Tempe Arizona which I think supports my "local" Mom and Pop hobby shop, (which I try to do as much of as I can) and of course almost guarantees that I do not have a messed up cover. Does that "hurt" Modelcars Mag?

Having said that, some folks may be willnig to pay a slightly different subscription rate to have their's bagged. If the cost was too high to do all of the issues, maybe it could simply be that a portion are bagged, and those that want them could pay to have it that way. This, I am sure, is probably nothing new that you have not already thought about though.

Hope the back improves Gregg,

Mark
