DANB Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Hey people, this is yet another good score off ebay, personally i have never heard of Tim Richmond but im sure he was a great enough driver to score a line of model cars. I just wanted to build an old old Monte Carlo stock car lol The box was opened but its all there, mostly on sprues too. Keen to get started, so keen that i don't think there will be much sleep tonight lol
roadhawg Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Tim Richmond was a tragic story in NASCAR. He was a great driver and a good guy who unfortunately was struck down by illness. Can't wait to see this one finished. Yes, he was one of the best. We met Tim at the World Crown 300 one year, and he was a nut! Lol. Had he lived, he would have at least as many wins as Earnhardt....probably as many championships too. Keep the updates coming.
roadhawg Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Hey, for what it's worth, the movie "Days Of Thunder" is loosely based on Tim Richmonds racing career, and his relationship with crew chief Harry Hyde and car owner Rick Hendrick.
slantasaurus Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Richmond Here is a short history on Tim, a great driver who never had the time to achive what he was capable of. If he had raced for a longer time his name would be better known.
Dave Van Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Actually, "Days of Thunder" was loosely based on several drivers from Buddy Baker on up. It was kind of an amalgam movie. A Very Very Bad movie....... Anyway.....the Revell Monogram Monte Carlo kit is a pretty decent kit. The chassis is just a little dated for the car but it's very close.....and it builds easily so a plus. Watch the decals in that kit. One run had bad decals. IIRC the white backing was omitted on one run so the decals bleed so bad they are not usable. BUT there are good aftermarket decals available if you got a bad set.
DANB Posted March 15, 2012 Author Posted March 15, 2012 Thanks for the comments every single one of you, really sad to hear about Tim Richmonds life being cut short, sounds like Nascar would of been allot differant today had he of lived. I have also seen days of thunder, a prety good movie i thought! I honestly dont get why there are so many Tom Cruise haters out there. Not good about the decals, the set in my last model (Olds Funny Car) were very brittle and the set with this model look to be in allot better condition. Hopefully they are. Knowing what i do know this build is a bit more special than the others, i didn't get much done last night apart from sanding the body and getting some primer on it, assembled the motor and gearbox and layed a first coat of paint, as well as a coat of paint on all the roll bars.
Funkster Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Had Tim Richmond lived, he would been the intimidater. Not Earnhardt, as Tim would intimidate Earnhardt and Dale would complain to Nascar. Had Tim Lived he would of had dale's record and not have to crash other drivers to do it!
bbowser Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Days of Thunder was Top Gun in race cars. Hokey, but as close as we've got to a movie about NASCAR. Tim Richmond also had a career in Indycars. Very talented driver. Looking forward to your build.
Scuderia Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) He was quite charasmatic too. Could have helped market the sport in a wide range YEARS before Jeff Gordon did. I'm anxious to see this one, its always a nice looking build. Especially if you get the shade of red right. Edited March 15, 2012 by Scuderia
Dave Van Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) have also seen days of thunder, a prety good movie i thought! I honestly dont get why there are so many Tom Cruise haters out there. Well....I geuss living in Charlotte and working in NASCAR my view is different than most. The movie was filled with so much junk it made it laughable. So many things they talked about were just goofy. Made it hard for me to watch. Then in the movie they would be racing at 'Atlanta' but the film footage would be Charlotte.....Then when in the film they are racing at Charlotte....it would be Michigan. WHY??? If you go to all these tracks use the right track. Also the manufacture of a car will change in the middle of a lap. Watch and see the BUD T-Bird change into a Monte Carlo in the race!! Come on....cars are wrecked then show up fixed a lap later.....It was a slap in the face to fans who could read the walls at the tracks. No respect for the sport in my book. Want to see a REAL NASCAR movie??? Get Last American Hero......THAT'S a racing movie. Tom Cruise haters??? Well my daughter is a child development specialist. 6 years of hard schooling. She has seen and helped treat 1000's for kids with development disabilites. So how can Tom get on national TV (Today show) and say all kids with 'development issues' are just soft parents that don't raise their kids right. If he was talking about a race he would have been hung....but kids with metal issues....it's OK to slander. Look it up! Anyway....model cars.....the only thing I don't like about the MC kit is the headers are wrong. Find a set from a 1/24 scale Monogram 57 Chevy if you car. Much more correct for this car. 1zebra3 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) Tim Richmond died too soon as did Davey Allison and Alan Kulwici. There are others but these were 3 of my favorite drivers Edited March 17, 2012 by 1zebra3
DANB Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 Few updates, body as almost ready for decals, and ive started putting the chassis and framework together, the motor is ready to slot in, its coming together quite fast in fact. I also watched The Last American hero this arvo, great movie absolutely loved it. I wish i could have the Valiant running pipes as loud as that Mustang lol. Cheers Dave Van.
Dave Van Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Looks great so far!!! Nice paint job too! Glad you saw Last American Hero....a great film.
DANB Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 It is, i will probably end up putting it on again tomorrow night for the old man lol The waterslides are going on very well considering there age.
Truck parts Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Daniel,The color looks right on,and yes Tim Richmond may have change the sport if he had lived longer. To bad we will never know what Tim,Davey, or Alan could have done in the sport..
DANB Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 The Color is Tamiya Italian Red, its the closest i could find in a spray can. Very close now, body is awaiting clear.
MarkJ Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 (edited) You are lucky the decals did'nt turn brittle at their age. Excellent job. Edited March 17, 2012 by MarkJ
slantasaurus Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Looking great, I wish I could build a model this fast and have it come out looking this good.
DANB Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 You are lucky the decals did'nt turn brittle at their age. Excellent job. Tell me about it lol
DANB Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 Having aids is a prety (sensored) up way to die, and even though his record wasnt spectacular in any way. The 7 wins in his last full season is not bad at all. Even had Daytona under his belt. Also sounds like he fits into the Rich kid stereotype very well lol, as stated in that article.
DANB Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 Idk its always nice to know the history behind a car lol I will have to get some pictures for you guys tonight, all i need to do is wait for the weather to clear up so i can spray some clear and put the windows in.
route66modeler Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 hi, I think is was espn classic that ran a tv story on richmond. I watched it a few weeks ago. I won't comment on this personal life, but he was a hell of a driver. He ran rings around #3. Steve
TooOld Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 It's a shame that alot of NASCAR fans don't have any idea who Tim Richmond was . If he had lived he would be in the Hall of Fame now .
