Anyone know if there is an aftermarket source for 1/24-25 scale chain-link fence? I'm thinking about using that "expanded metal" mesh like on one of those anti-spatter frying pan lids, but if there's an actual aftermarket product available I'd prefer that.

Window screen seems like it's the right scale to me.

It is, but the problem is that it's "flat." It doesn't have that 3-D depth that chain-link fence does, which is why I first thought of that metal mesh that frying pan splatter shields are made of.

A few years ago I found some screen-mesh type of fabric at my LHS in the section where ribbons and such are sold. I painted some of this material and used it to simulate chain link mesh in the windows of my Reaver.

Quite effective, if you ask me.

I bought it at The Hobby Bench here in Phoenix. Its natural color is a pale green, but I don't recall any name brand associated with it. When I found it, I bought a couple of feet of it and still have quite a bit of it left, so I haven't looked for any lately.

Check at Michaels or some other similar outlet, if you can't find any, let me know and I'll see if I can locate some for you here.

Not always. Some brands of window screen are woven, and they aren't simply flat pieces of mesh. I know that Self Serve Lumber locations sell woven metal window screen, but a lot of the bigger retailers carry only the flat metal or nylon style.

Harry...... Luke57 had a sweet chain link fence in his garage Dio, I remember he did describe the whole thing, posts and all.

I lost the pix :(

Harry I found the topic from Luke '57 but the pic is gone.here is the link and maybe you can figure out what he is describing.

Jerry (Luke57) RIP, used the mesh on the outside of automotive air filters.

I believe he said he used the one off his pick up truck. That's what I've used and it looks great.

Takes a bit to cut it off, but worth the effort.

Cooking / kitchen supply stores and hardware stores are great places to find stuff like that, and usually at much cheaper prices than hobby supplies. I know I've seen some wire mesh that would have the look you want, but I'm having no luck recalling where. The stuff I'm picturing was brass or copper wire mesh, so would need paint.

That does look pretty good, especially the shape of the mesh. Do you remember where you bought it or what it's called?

Harry,

The stuff is called plainly "Nylon Netting". Surely you have a Michael's or Hobby Lobby somewhere not too far from you, or for that matter a fabric store? Any craft store or fabric store should have the stuff. It comes in various sizes of openings, go for as large as you can as chain link fencing is what, 2" squares? The netting is quite stiff actually, and is hexagonal rather than in squares, but it can give the effect of chain-link fence reasonably convincingly.

The Amaco WireForm mesh mentioned above looks pretty good to me. I'm looking at two versions I have right now, and the 1/8 size is the smallest you'd want. I'd go with the 1/4 pattern, etc. which you can see here, in diamond mesh or studio mesh. I don't know that they have the interlaced woven look you want, but they seem convincing to me. If you really need interlacing, Sculptor's Mesh appears to be the ticket.

I like that stuff because it has that "3D" look of chain-link fence.
