cderekw Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 This is my 1970 Boss 429 Mustang, it's only my 2nd build ever. My first build turned out more of a glue bomb. My wife bought me the Hertz Mustang GT350 because she knew I liked Mustangs and thought I might want to try to build a model one...like I said it turned out to be a glue bomb that I painted and built in just one day and I was unhappy with it and thought I could do better. So I did some researching and I found this website and the Under Glass forum and I was shocked at what I saw in the amount of detail you guys can put into these models. This is my second attempt that took my 8 days to build while working a factory job 12 hours a day, too. I discoverd it would be easier to paint the pieces while they're still in the plastic molds and touching them up after breaking them out. (someone tell me if there is a better way.) I also discoverd wired engines, which I've never thought of before on a model car. I attempt to wire the engine on this build using telephone wire. I know it's a little big but I just couldn't wait for the wire that I ordered to get in. I only had one day off and I wanted to get this thing together after working on it through the week. Painted the body with a base coat of flat black, let it dry for a couple days and taped it off and painted the rest Graphit Dust I really didn't look at any reference for the parts or even use the instructions, I just painted everything in a way that I thought looked cool. I tried my best to detail the interior, I don't have a steady enough hand to do gauges yet. My first shot at wiring an engine, I hope to get better at it. I'll post the finished project soon in the Under Glass forum.
Foxer Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 A commendable job and looks like you're having fub .. what it's all about. Looking forward to seeing it all together.
cobraman Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Looks like things are going good. Keep and building and reading the how to's and you will get better and better.
Custom Mike Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Charles, for only your second model, you're doing great. And as far as accuracy, if you like the way it looks, sometimes that's the best way to go. Getting bogged down in the "super accurate" stuff can be a real pain sometimes, so don't sweat it, it's your model, and you build it to make yourself happy. Now I'm heading over to see the completed product!
Jantrix Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Hey that looks miles better than my second model. Very nice work. A couple of ideas for you. I like to spray paint EVERYTHING. Put the parts you can up on toothpicks and spray them. The rest I stick to some tape and spray them that way. I only use brush paints for detailing. For your ignition wiring try 30 gauge wrapping wire from Radio Shack. Keep at it Charles. Your doing fine.
Dirkpitt289 Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Looking great. The spark plug wires look a little large but other then that is pretty sharp
W-409 Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I have to agree with Rob and Dirk. You're doing great job, but those ignition wires are bit too thick. Maybe smaller diameter wire would look better. I've bought mine from Scale Dreams, but cauge wrapping wire works too. Nice job with the body painting, I'm very interested about seeing more-you're doing amazing job on your second build.
cderekw Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 Thanks guys. I used telephone wire for this build but I've got some scale wire now. I've got some really good ideas for some future models but one will be a bit challenging. I'm looking forward to learning more and improving my skills.
blazefox Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Hint for the future mustang engines are usualy ford racing blue
cderekw Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 Yeah, I was going to do it that color but I decided to go to just go with the red to make it pop. For some reason I just like red engines. Maybe its just a phase.
cderekw Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 I meant aluminum...not red. I wanted that diamond in a jewelry box feel.
Rusty Sierra Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Liking the color and detail. for some of the thin trim rings and stuff on the dash you can use a metallic silver pencil crayon to get clean detailed effect.
