Scale-Master Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 This started out as an old late ‘70’s Sunbird by Revell. These kits were tooled up after the Monroe Handler Mustang II and share many of the same parts. The chassis detail is weak and the size of the parts is anemic. I had these leftover test shot parts stashed away since about 1977/8(?) and there is no clear shot in the pile. I had an extra Monza nose and hood and thought they looked better than the Pontiac parts. They are supposed to be plug & play, but a little bit of sanding and filling were required to get them to line up, SOP for the era. I am using the customized Sunbird rear end. The rims are easily identifiable leftovers from an earlier project. I milled out the hubcap/lug area… And machined some aluminum sleeves to make them fit in some larger tires and add some offset… This is a rear… The fronts and rears have different offsets. Rear parts on the right, front parts on the left.
Badluck 13 Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I am going to enjoy this, always did/still do love the Monza IMSA look and with your talents this is gonna be sweeeeeeet!!
3men2s Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 you started right,...wide fenders need wide and deep wheels, seen your work and this one for sure is going to be a killer....will be glued to this post
iBorg Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I so want these parts to try the same build. I've got the AMT ones but the Revell parts look so much "racier." Looks great and I'll be watching!
Jantrix Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I've kitbashed this Monza kit and added a moded nascar chassis to fit. It turned out great. This body is very cool despite the rest of the kit.
Scale-Master Posted June 13, 2012 Author Posted June 13, 2012 Now that is a great idea Rob, too bad I already decided to take the easy way out and go curbside...
Mad Slammer Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 That was my first ever model... Nice start... will follow this one...
Tony T Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I have the Sunbird built somewhere! Looks like a great start!!
Jantrix Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Now that is a great idea Rob, too bad I already decided to take the easy way out and go curbside... Well considering the Revell IMSA Monza kit and the IMSA Mustang kit released about the same time share an interior cup/chassis/power plant despite one being GM and the other Ford, it says a lot about the quality of the kit. Doing it curbside is a perfectly understandable solution. Looking forward to seeing it done.
Casey Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I had the "Lightning Rods" version of the Monza, and to say this kit is poor is a huge understatement, but as Rob said, the body is the best part. Are you planning to open up the hood louvers?
Steven Zimmerman Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I am looking for one of these if anyone has one they want to get rid of ?...I bought one on line, but it was mainly a box of sprue !....'Z'
Scale-Master Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 I am not going to open the louvers, if they are lucky they will get black paint... I textured the wheel centers for a cast look and went with a white-silver for the color. I also machined a set of center lock nuts and stems.
Scale-Master Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 The color is a mix of Mazda Pearl Black, (thank you Mark Taylor), two Humbrol pearl clears and a few drops of violet pearl.
Scale-Master Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 The interior is done, quick & dirty OOB. I added some texture (velour-ish) to the seats and some decals for the gauges and radio. (Note the molded in CB too.) Wood trim (remember, this was the 70s…) is just hand painted.
Scale-Master Posted June 22, 2012 Author Posted June 22, 2012 What a difference a bit of wax can make, especially on a non-cleared witches brew mix of urethane and enamels using lacquer thinner to marry them all together. Now it is onto the black trim and graphics…
Scale-Master Posted June 25, 2012 Author Posted June 25, 2012 Tail lights were done with BMF, Turn Signal Amber, Transparent Red and Pearl White. Window trim is done and the graphics have been applied.
