Miatatom Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Seems like the original box a model comes in is highly valued if it's in good condition. I guess I'm missing something here. What makes them so valuable?
Fat Brian Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Some people are box collectors, they just like the boxes I guess.
sjordan2 Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 (edited) I have no idea, since very few kits actually sell for something you might call "collector value." But just in case it might help me sell a kit, I flatten boxes from different issues I have built and save them to go along with newer kits or other boxings (UK vs US versions, for example) for added value. I have never sold kits on eBay, but that day is coming. Edited June 19, 2012 by sjordan2
Harry P. Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Like most "collectibles," they have no inherent value; whatever "value" they have is the value that collectors give to them. Some people collect them, so to those that do, they have a certain value or price that they're willing to pay. Of course, to a non-collector, they're worthless. To me, once the model gets done they're nothing but garbage that gets put into the recycling bin out to the curb.

Rob Hall Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 I hunt down the original boxes to go w/ my older kits that I've bought used w/o the boxes. I keep the boxes and instructions of all the kits I've bought w/ the boxes over the years.
disabled modeler Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 I like the old box art and use the old boxes for model storage. Its also nice to have the old ones for models one has that don't have a box instead of being in a baggie it helps protect them. Another good use I have done with them is wallpaper for the shop.
martinfan5 Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Just because a person is trying to sell a model kit box for "valuable price" does not mean its valuable, I do agree it would be cool to have the first fun box's of some re-released kits.
southpier Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 in the olden days, boxes were sturdy enough to store things in. not the fold up gar - bahge the kits are packed in now.
cooltoys1 Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I just love the old box art, it took so much more talent for an artist to oil paint a car than to just take a pic.
