cruz Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Guys, I have noticed that a lot of you take pictures of your models with a cluttered or messy background. It only takes a few minutes to place some sort of construction paper in the background and show us your stuff in a better mode. It truly makes a difference and it doesn't cost anything even if you use a cheap camera. Thank you!!
mikemodeler Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Although I have not posted any pictures of my builds (yet, new camera so maybe soon!), I do agree with Marcos as the cluttered backgrounds make it harder to "see" the builds, especially those that are posted in Under Glass. Imagine your reaction if his beautiful red Impala had been photgraphed on a cluttered workbench or in a display case with 10 other models!
rmvw guy Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 I have been using poster board (more like thick paper) purchased for 35 cents at Hobby Lobby. You can get it in about any color. It does make a difference. Also outdoor shots under overcast sky helps. I set up a small table and curve the paper/board up against the house before placeing a model on it. Hope this helps someone.
cruz Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 Thanks for the response guys, it's really a simple petition for your benefit, it truly does make a difference to the people that are actually looking at the pictures and it's a bit more professional. Personally I am in the process of learning a few photographic techniques and still have a lot to learn but I am a lot more happy with my pictures nowadays than ever before.
rmvw guy Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 (edited) Just for comparison here is a recent build on the bench then with the paper background added. ( I'm not trying to show off my model here .) Edited July 5, 2012 by rmvw guy

Dr. Cranky Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Cruz, it's the reason why I always like to have a few photo-op bases close at hand. It's a good idea to have the model be the focus of the picture.
plasticbutcher Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Cruz, I agree with you---and I am really bad about clutter with my wip. pics, Ron, that is a sweet truck no matter which pic you look at, btw Love the Beattle Baily on the wall
Foxer Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Can't argue with any of this. Here's what resides in my workshop ...
cruz Posted July 5, 2012 Author Posted July 5, 2012 Very cool setup mike, I like it. I personally don't have enough room, I build in a little corner of my laundry room and had a similar setup as you. I do have a few shelves next to me and came up with an idea. I removed a few of the models I had in the space, now I have a cool setup that will be stationary!
Agent G Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Whooooaaaaaa, now wait a minute here. You guys actually finish one of these things? G
bbowser Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 One of the first rules learned in photography school is pay attention to the backround. It's hard at first not to focus your attention on the subject at hand, but with practice you learn to "see" everything in the frame as the camera will (like that tree growing out of Aunt Gertrude's head). That and proper lighting will go a long way in getting better pictures.
Jantrix Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Another point I'd like to mention is before you take any shots of a build, WIP or complete, is dust the darned thing off. Use a clean make-up brush and give it a quick dusting.

Dr. Cranky Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Mike, where did you get the lens blower? Very cool
Foxer Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 On 7/6/2012 at 5:10 PM, Dr. Cranky said: Mike, where did you get the lens blower? Very cool It's a Giottos Rocket Air Blaster. I got it originally to clean dust out of my SLR camera .. it's intended purpose. It shoots a pretty powerful stream of air and is much better at dusting than the small camera brush I have. The brush is still useful for dusting cars but the Rocket blasts dust to the stratosphere! Was one at Amazon but may be other cheaper places. This shows exactly what it is anyway.
MoparWoman Jamie Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Now please take this is a very very good way.. please. LOL Boy, what is this? a web site about how to post your photos of your finish in a fashion way that others like for you to do? LOL. I thought it was a hobby to build model cars and share them, so what if the back drop is messy or cluttered up? LOL. It's the person's work area and not yours. Maybe it's how that person likes to take his/her photos of there builds. I find it kind of more interesting when a photo shows other displayed models in the background behind the finish model that is being shown. It goes to show that the person has built others before and also what his/her love in the hobby is for and kinds of model cars as well. I think one thing you all for get at times is who the builder is also, we're all different, maybe one builder likes posting one way, where as the other builder likes posting photos another.. it even goes for the work bench area's as well with the builders. Maybe one likes it like that where as another builder likes his/her's the other way around. Did you all ever look at a calendar/s? and look at all the different ones that are out there? some has just one thing on them, like what the OP started this thread about and the others of calendars has the other way around. and Have you ever heard of what people say about the background of the photo and how it can help out with what is in the center of the photo. I'm not going to go out and buy a piece of poster board or a back drop just because some of you don't like how a photo of a model car was taken. But at times I will take a finish model car out side and take photos of it only if I want to. Like I have always said, if you don't like how I post photos, then please by all means don't look at them... no hide off my back LOL only stuff you might be missing out on that I am sharing is all LOL.
rmvw guy Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 You can go very far with photography here but, what I'm suggesting is useing a cheap 35 cent peice of craft store paper as a background just so everyone else can see your model. If you prefer to look at cluttered benches there is a thread on here for that also. And by the way I am useing a camera purchased at a garage sale for $5, it doesn't take a lot of money either. I have learned most of what I am saying on this forum and appreciate all of you.
