Dr. Cranky Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 (edited) How are you coping? How are you staying cool? How are you building? You don't have to believe in global warming to feel the wrath of this summer heat, but it also means that if your humidity and heat index are through the roof, you might not be able to paint, but here's one of Doctor Cranky's idea on how to stay cool and STILL BUILD your models. Fill up the bathtub with water, and if the water is still hot, put some ice in it . . . and then get yourself one of these: Instant work bench, just make sure you don't drop your hobby blade (and of course, don't use powertools!) NOTE: this post might certify that Doctor Cranky's brain has already fried. Edited July 6, 2012 by Dr. Cranky
SuperStockAndy Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I actually got quite a bit of building in (as in finishing a model) due to staying inside. Heat index today was 113, high humidity..
Dr. Cranky Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 Humidity is bad for painting, as we all know. I am staying out of the sun too. I might rent some digging equipment and start working on my underground bunker.
martinfan5 Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Oh yea , the over 100 degrees days have already got to me, I will say it was no fun moving in the 110 or so temp last sunday
JamesW Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 According to Weatherbug. Heat index topped out at 112 today, humidity 38%. Actual temp was 103.
JamesW Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Oh yea , the over 100 degrees days have already got to me, I will say it was no fun moving in the 110 or so temp last sunday That's how it was for me on the 19th. It took us 10 hrs to move. Felt like I was gonna pass out a few times.
Foxer Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 (edited) I like the candle touch .. for stretching sprue. I've been painting like crazy ... dehumidifier runs 24/7 in my workshop basement. ... stays cool down there too! Edited July 6, 2012 by Foxer
LoneWolf15 Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Too daggone hot to paint ! But I can build to my heart's content in the air-conditioned shop ! Lol! I told Virgil this afternoon that he could take back this 97 degree temperature that he sent up to the Burgh right quick ! You hear me , Doc ? Lol !
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Pretty sure if I had a tub full of whatever that is in the second picture, I wouldn't worry too much about working on model cars, at least for a while.
Greg Myers Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Oh yea , the over 100 degrees days have already got to me, I will say it was no fun moving in the 110 or so temp last sunday Moving ? Where are you moving to? I'm moving too. Right now we're "just" packing.Haven't EVEN gotten to the models yet.
BKcustoms Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 It's been well over 100 degrees here for almost 2 weeks! By the time I got done putting the motor in my 1:1 on Wednesday I probably lost like 10 pounds in sweat lol.
Chuck Most Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 For me it hasn't been the heat (just put in a new AC unit), just the humidity, which pretty much kills any thoughts of painting. I'm in the same boat as Donn- just building what I can, so I'll have a bunch of stuff ready to hit the paint shop once the humidity goes down.
Junkman Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 How I'm coping with heat??? Well, I switched it back on!
Agent G Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I'm sorry Don, but 96 is a pleasent spring day here in the Mojave desert. Many many days where the needle is way over 100 lately, then it frikkin' RAINED on the fourth. Go figure. G
Dr. Cranky Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 Christian, that's right, you guys are hosting the Olympics. Geez, that's going to be crazy crowded, but probably good for the economy. Hang in there, folks . . . winter is just around the corner.
MAGNUM4342 Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I have a relatively small place with central air but it's not coping well. With heat outside topping around 105 degrees a couple days the a/c fought to keep it at 84 inside. It's been set on 76 but doesn't reach that until late into the evening hours. I feel really bad for those who are trying to cope with just fans. I had a fairly big window unit, and there was an older lady down the street who was sitting all day by a southside window in her home with a box fan going full pelt. I got a young college fella and a couple of his frat brothers together and we installed the window unit for her. She brought us donuts!

I hope it's not good for the economy! If there is one thing I have learned in life, then it's that whenever they say it's good for the economy, I know exactly that it's bad for me. And this Olympiade, you know, the trouble with these international affairs is, that they attract those foreign types. Edited July 6, 2012 by Junkman

G Tell me about the rain, that was the day I decided to go back to the old house to bring over the stuff from the tool shed, it rain the whole friggin time we were loading the trailer, a open trailer, then of course, as soon as we were done and heading back, the rain stopped. But I will tell you this, I was much happier doing that in the rain then in the 100 + degree temps
Fat Brian Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I tried to get some relief today but I didn't make it in time.

I remember I was in Los Angeles for the Olympics and all they did was round up all the homeless and bus them into the desert.
Harry P. Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 Yesterday it was 103. Today it was 103. Tomorrow is supposed to be "only" 100. I might have to crank up the old furnace...
Dr. Cranky Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 The real question (and I hope this doesn't happen in our life time) is what is going to happen when the temps start reaching 125 or so. At what temperature does styrene begin to soften? Obviously, this is the least of our concerns if that happened.
