Jantrix Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) I've been in a bit of a slump lately with my some of my other builds so it's time .........to start ANOTHER!!! And I think doing something low pressure and ultimately forgiving as a rat rod. I've had this one in planning stages for a while now and after seeing Alyn's excellent '40 Ford I figured the time is right. It's going to be a gasser-esque street freak. It's a little challenging as it's 1/24 but I'll get by. I'm still puzzling out the the power plant but I'm leaning towards the double blown hemi from the Stude kit or a nice 409 from the AMT '57 Chevy. If anyone has some other ideas, I'm all ears. I'm going to add a straight front axle but I'll likely use the kit supplied rear end. The wheels and tires are from a Boot Hill Epress junker. More soon. Edited December 18, 2012 by Jantrix
Jantrix Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 Worked on the part I hate the most about channeling over the frame - altering the interior. All in all this one wasn't to bad. And by the way, aside from that little grill shell/fender do-hickey, that will be it for fenders.
Guest Darkside Customs Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 You never disappoint bro! Nice work!
Jantrix Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 Cut down the firewall. Took about 3/8 of an inch out of the middle. After some test fitting and study I've decided that the straight axle and 12 spokes aren't gonna work on this one. I'm going to just use some smaller tires and some five spokes a try for a bit of rake.
Jantrix Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 Thanks Doc. I've done some work on the interior and I'm waiting for a 1/24 Chevy big block from Ace-Garageguy before I finalize the layout of the front end. I'm either going to weather this one or just go straight sinister flat black with some door art. As always critiques, comments and alternative ideas are always welcome.
Jantrix Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 (edited) Here's the shifter I cobbled together. The skull is from Warhammer miniatures and was given to me by a friend. The center console is from a Mustang diecast I think. It fits perfectly. Edited July 18, 2012 by Jantrix
gautreau Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Great looking build so far.I've wanted to build something similar to this.I'm going to be following this thread.
Jantrix Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 (edited) Thanks guys, I appreciate the ataboys.. As soon as I get the engine in the mail I'll finalize my motor mounts and how I'm going to mount that grill assembly (and assuming it friggin stops raining) I should be able to start painting. Aside for some very subtle weathering, it's going to be a clean, functional street rod, semi-gloss black, black/grey interior, and a grey vert top. I'm going make the engine center of attention on this one. Plenty of detail, but not over done. More soon. Edited July 19, 2012 by Jantrix
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Geez, I guess I'd better get that engine on the way quick-like, eh? I'm going to box it right now............
bryan_m Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 oooohh!!! me likey!! nice start, and yea that shifter is badass! cheers bryan
Jantrix Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 Geez, I guess I'd better get that engine on the way quick-like, eh? I'm going to box it right now............ Thanks Bill, I don't want you to think I'm nagging or anything.
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Thanks Bill, I don't want you to think I'm nagging or anything. No problem, man. Sometimes I need a boot in the backside. It's boxed, addressed and will be winging its way to you tomorrow AM.
Jantrix Posted July 21, 2012 Author Posted July 21, 2012 Okay with a big thanks to Ace-Garageguy, I now have a big block Chevy for this ride. After some test fitting, some frame stretching is going to have to happen. I'll add about 4 millimeter just aft of the motor mount. The wheels and tires are painted and ready. The rears wheels are from the Boot Hill Express, the fronts from the '53 Stude and the spinners from the Revell '40 Ford pick-up. I think they match up nicely. More soon!
Alyn Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Thanks for the shout-out, Rob. Looks like you're off to a good start. Nothing like a channel job to create a bunch more work Here's hoping that you don't settle for the plain flat black paint job. A light pastel with major problems would look great on this body.
Jantrix Posted July 21, 2012 Author Posted July 21, 2012 (edited) Alyn, I really am torn on the paint. If it is weathered it will be very mildly where the flat paint has been worn to the primer in areas that get handled a lot. Edited July 21, 2012 by Jantrix
Alyn Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 That's what I was thinking too. Keep in mind that it's tough to get that level of wear without some chips, scratches and maybe some modest rust on lower panel areas. When I see this body, the image of a couple of guys in T-shirts and jeans driving around slow, looking for some trouble comes to mind.
Jantrix Posted July 22, 2012 Author Posted July 22, 2012 Thanks Glenn. I got the frame strethed today. Plenty of room for the big mill and belts. No clearance issues on the front suspension cross member either. I'd like to get more done today, but I got called into work. Be cool.
Jantrix Posted July 24, 2012 Author Posted July 24, 2012 I have decided on a color. I'm going to prime in grey, do a coat in the pebble tan and then top coat with the satin burgundy. Then I'll sand gently with a high grit until the burgundy starts to thin and the tan and greys start peeking through in high wear areas. No rust, just a little grime and faded paint. Whatcha think Alyn? Is that gonna rock it better than the flat black?
