I have heard that the DOT was considering having something like that on hybrid/electric cars. Seems that there have been some accidents involving vision impared pedestrians stepping out in front of them becasue they couldn't hear them.

Maybe the DOT should require noisemakers similar to the ones on modern cross-walk signals. Can you imagine all those Priusses driving around chirping like electronic crickets?

In highschool I had a friend who had one of the early Honda Civics. The shielding on the sparkplugs wasn't good, so you could hear the engine through the stereo. If you set it on a blank station and cranked up the stereo it actually sounded like it had quite a motor under the hood.

I'd hope those noisemakers would work. I have heard a Tahoe hybrid running on electricity, sounded like a vacume cleaner, Volts are quieter, but you still get some mechanical noises from it.

The Prius is silent, we had one at work and there were a few times when it was moving around the parking lot, that the only sound you got as warning was the crunching of a piece of gravel or a little scraping noise of a tire when they turned the wheel. That car kind of creeped me out.
