bryan_m Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 ok guys, my girlfriend and I went to a yard sale yesterday, and i got this thing for $3.00! thr grilles in the doors will be rusty, as will the hinges and knobs. im also gonna add some glas to the doors.... and another shelf so it will hold three builds. im working on the grilles now, i have to find my palm sander to do the wood.......im going to add some sort of background to it as well behind the cars. any suggestions you guys have are very welcome...........lemme know what ya think........and throw any ideas my way please! cheers bryan
bryan_m Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 i have some smaller things i will put in there too, like some gas pumps and stuff like that... im workin the door grilles now, stripping about 100 coats of paint off of them!! LOL like i said, if you guys have any ideas you think i can use please let me know...........i dont know a whole lot about distressing wood, but i am gonna strip it bare, and go from there........ thanks again! bryan
bryan_m Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 oh i forgot..........what are you guys thinkin abuot the caddy project? it will have a few styling cues from the `59 caddy, fat white walls, engine, hubcaps, and one of those really cool air cleaners...........any idead are welcome! cheers bryan
bryan_m Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 ok fellas, this is how far i made it......... i got the left door grille rusting completed......... here it is compared to one that isny rusted and again installed back in the cabinet.... i used mostly mig powders, thinned out with mig reducer......i also used some doc obriens, and my special bottle of "real ground up rust" ( thanks to mike napoleon) tomorrow i will get some paint stripper, does anyone know of anything other to use than "strip ease" its a tad expensive, and im workin on a budget here...........any help is welcome...... one last shot of the door, and thats it for tonight, please lemme know what you think guys........ it still needs some "staining" and "runs" on it here and there so it looks like water has been flowing over it... while the white paint on the wooden part is being stripped i will be starting on that caddy build, im gonna use those caddy hubcaps and wide whites, a 59 caddy engine, again any suggestions you guys can come up with will be greatly appreciated, just keep in mind that im not gonna get into any crazy body work........ LOL thanks for lookin, i hope you have enjoyed it! cheers bryan
bryan_m Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 thats all for me tonight fellas...... keep this caddy in mind, im really lookin for ideas on this one.......... like i said, im gonna use the hubcaps, and these wide whites, along with the 59 caddy engine, and maybe some fiddly bits from the interiorr, u=but thats all i have for now, so let the suggestions/ideas roll fellas, they are definetely welcome! have a good night everyone, its time for some sleep i am totally shot! cheers bryan
JasonFL Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Always a fan of your work Bryan, even these cool side projects. One idea that came to mind was something my friend did with her old bookshelf. She was a big surfing/skateboarding fan so she collected a bunch of magazines, cut out tons of pictures, then took paste glue that dries on clear and glued on photos everywhere like one big collage. It be cool if you did that to the top or sides of this with the rusted and faded look with the photos of your choice, some how make them look aged then throw some sort of sealer on it. Also the wife and I had an old wooden coffee table that had scratches, instead of throwing it away we had collected a bunch of random stickers, so we started a sticker table. The cool part was our friends would bring over random stickers to add, made a nice personal touch, and with every sticker was a story. Just some ideas. Would look great with just the rust and faded paint look. Like always can't wait to see how it turns out, nice find.
bryan_m Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 oooh, that sounds cool Jason! and i have a bunch of old decals too!! thanks for the idea....... bryan
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 That cabinet is going to be interesting, a good showcase . . . and I hope you continue to work on the caddy. Looking good.
crazyjim Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 You could clear plexiglass in the doors to make it lighter.
cobraman Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Hey Bryan ! The Caddy looks good so far but you and I know that you will never finish it. : ) The cabinet looks good but if not needed I would not use the trim that goes over the glass. It looks ok it just obstructs the view of your cars. Just one mans opinion.
bryan_m Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 this is the third time i have tried to reply to you guys.............my internet is being stupid! ill be back later. b
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Oh, but don't delay on our daily allowance of eye candy. LOL. Hurry on back.
bryan_m Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 ok buddy......ill be at the bench soon........ bryan
bryan_m Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 that sounds good mike! mine is going to be white exterior, with a satin pebble interior and vinyl top.. ive been sittin for a couple hours diggin up parts, and it will have several machine guns in the trunk along with two "briefcases".......ill leave it to your imagination to whats in them! LOL i also have a couple six packs of beer (cranky ale) for the back seat, and a styrofoam cooler for in the trunk....plus a ton of other stuff. when i finished lookin for that stuff i got back to the display case, and the doors are being stripped as we speak! well, i am shot mike im outta here. have a good nite everyone, cheers bryan
Guest Darkside Customs Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Nice work... Love the Caddy bro!
blunc Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 The case needs some lights on each shelf, some white LEDs in each corner of each shelf should work without taking up much room and you can run them from an old cell phone charger...everyone has one of those laying around, right? If not, you can usually find one at a thrift shop for a buck.
bryan_m Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 thats a great idea mike! i have some leds i can use too, and i never knew you could run them with a cell phone charger! thats awesome! im gonna finish stripping it tomorrow... cheers bryan
