Mike Kucaba Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Lets not forget the many swap/toy shows that are happening in your area, probably every weekend. Many people put in a lot of effort to put these together. And yes,I know the economy sucks.
Dave Van Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 I'd love to atteand a model show of any kind.....but you also need to remember many more folks live in areas that never have shows than live in areas with shows. The last show that was within 3 hour drive was 5 years ago and must not have done well as it didn't happen again. Our Wally does not have models and would not carry what I buy anyway. My local hobby shop is 3 hour drive. If Wally did carry models I'd check them when I went (not often) but just to kill boredom while the wife shops.
mikemodeler Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Good points from the both of you. Mike, I live in Charlotte and there has not been a model show or swap meet for 2 years here. I can drive 90 minutes and hit several shows over the course of the year, just have to make sure I don't have any conflicts with my schedule. I have spent more online this year than I probably have over the last 10 years, mainly because what I am looking for is not available locally and I have been on a resin kick as of late. Dave, I am with you on the Wal Mart thing- I never bought alot from them as they did not have what I would consider items of interest. Yes, there were some kits I bought there, but they were mostly for the parts (engine/wheels). I would look at Wal Mart next time I am there, but not going to get excited.
PatRedmond Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 I'm pretty lucky here. Toronto in 3 weeks or so, Toledo a couple weeks after that, Detroit late November....then Detroit again in April.

That's a good point, Mike. While I love to go to the four or so local swap meets we have each year in the Milwaukee area, there's no guarantee I will find the kit(s) I'm looking for at any one of them. Online, I can see and know it's on hand, ready to buy, and at what price. Plus, I don't have to go anywhere to get it, as it will be shipped to my door. I usually leave swap meets with parts kits, parts bags, or one or two kits, and rarely ever a new kit...but I go whenever I can.
kyotey1693 Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Is there a place on here that is region specific or contains links to clubs or calendars that may be local to our area? If not maybe we could start a regional resource category and people could post what is local to them. I'm sure there are a few clubs or meets that go on around me but I haven't made it out from under my rock in a while and I have no idea who or where they are.

Lucas, Towards the bottom of the main page of this forum is a section called "Community". In that section, the first sub category is Model Club News and the second is Contest & Shows. It is within these two sub categories that you can find things more local to your area. You may have to travel a bit to some events, but a lot of them are worth it for what they offer. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the shows and clubs in your area to get the feel for what is happening nearby and decide which ones to see.

Casey, you had to rub it in about those shows I so do miss not living in the area didn't you?!?!?! I look for shows to get those out of production kits, resin pieces, and other bits. The new releases are so easily available from online sources and relatively cheap, so why spend the money on them? There are some shows coming up in September and November, I really hope to make it to them.
Skydime Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 In all my years of going to swap meets, I have only seen model cars there a total of four times. The last time of which, I bought an old orange molded Revell 69 Corvette 427 Coupe for $5.00.

I guess I haven't done enough exploring around here yet.
rel14 Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 i hit up all the goodwill stores, swap shops, flea markets, and whatever else to find a deal or a box of junk..
niteowl7710 Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 (edited) The only thing I advocate buying at Wal*Mart is groceries, and that's only cause that's what I do and it trickles down into cash in my pocket. Ultimately I don't care one way or the other, but to those with no LHS, no big box hobby stores, and no shows it presents an option for those who like to get out and "touch the product" rather than ordering online. We're lucky to have three large shows in Pittsburgh (4 if you count the IPMS show, but they'd hardly anything automotive in the vendor area), and I do the majority of my non-JDM purchasing throughout the year at those shows. Same here, we have three swap meets through out the year in my area, plus a few IPMS shows I believe, I try and buy from the swap meets, as a good number of the vendors are club members, and just like you, I buy all the JDM stuff online, and all the Domestic stuff at the shows for the most part
