cortinanut Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Here's my basic build of the AMT Opel GT reissue. It's box stock except for flocking, BMF, the license plate and a bit of work to correct the ride height in front. Might stick with newer kits for a while--boy have they improved!
Brian_B Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Sweet build. The second model I did as a kid was the Opel GT. Mine is yellow and sort of burgandy.
Jim N Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 One of my all time favorite cars. Very well done.
Mike Kucaba Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Nice ! I bought one new in 1970 Tried building one when I got back into modeling, but it is just too small. I'm champing at the bit to build the 1/20th scale one I have stashed.
slusher Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I really like your build. very nive work. my brother had one when l was a kid. First stock one l have seen built. thanks for sharing..
Mike Kucaba Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 It's a Japan kit with opening doors and hood by Nakamura. It's a motorized kit,but looks pretty accurate.I Thought about casting it.Anyone interested?
cortinanut Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Thanks for the kind words, guys! I didn't get too ambitious with this one, given the kit's limitations and my own, but it was a neat subject to work with. I'd love to see that 1/20 kit!
Gluhead Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Nice buildup, and great color. I've never owned one but have driven one on several occasions. They're a lot of fun. Mike, that 1/20 sounds thread-worthy. Hint hint.
Mike Kucaba Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Yeah,I've got to get some pics of that up here.
Guest Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Nice looking little Opel Steve! Looks pretty cool built up as a stocker. I have one of these that I want to build a drag car or street machine with sometime.
peekay Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 One of my faves too. I really like you're model - you've overcome the kit's problems with real skill. (I think I'd rather have one of these than a Corvette!)
TheCat Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 nice build. I have the older kit of this. How did it go together? Any issues with fitting?
cortinanut Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 nice build. I have the older kit of this. How did it go together? Any issues with fitting? No major fit issues except predictably with the hood, which is slightly too short and doesn't want to sit flush in the closed position. Weirdly, the lower part of the nose (from bumper height down) is integral to the floorpan in this kit. To prevent an ugly seam and potential fitting problems at final assembly, I cut it out of the floorpan and glued it to the body before painting. If I recall correctly (having done this one in fits and starts) I also trimmed the front inner fenders somewhat to get the chassis to mate cleanly into the body. The most pleasant surprise was that the glass all fit like a dream. This is not a bad kit, though it would be a challenge to create a proper engine bay. Lots of flash, of course, and several mold lines on the body that needed attention.
59 Impala Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Real nice Opel Steve. I like the color you chose. I just restored one glue bomb. I painted it a metallic red and put K&S Pittman decals on it. If you'd like I can post a pic of it. Dan
cortinanut Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 Thanks, Dan--I'd love to see a pic of your red Opel. The paint on mine is one of the Boyd colors from Testor, Lime Pearl. A little loud for most cars, but it seemed right for the Opel.
59 Impala Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 That color sure does look good on it. Mine has Testors little bottle paint airbrushed on it. It's just the metallic red over black. Well, here it is. Nothing perfect but a good shelf model. Dan
Dominik Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 pretty good, to see that GT built. If i read your posts, you did a great job for this result! Congrats! ...i didn't remember, when i see this "little Corvette" driving regular on the road without any clubmeeting....long time ago...
cortinanut Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 Hey Dan, nice job! I definitely think yours would take mine in the quarter mile. Lot of attitude in that little guy.
59 Impala Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Hey Dan, nice job! I definitely think yours would take mine in the quarter mile. Lot of attitude in that little guy. Thanks Steve. It does have the V6 in it with some go power I guess. :D But yours looks a lot better fer sure. Dan
