bryan_m Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) ok guys, i was diggin through my wheel stash, and i came across these wheels......as is, i really didnt like them, they arent very nice at all..... i trimmed up the outer edges, and i thought, "i could make these look better"......ive been wanting some decent wire wheels for a future project, so i grabbed my grinder, and some files and here is what i ended up with. so much better without all that nasty plastic filling in those spokes!! it took me about 30 minutes to do this one wheel, they end up being pretty delicate....i still have to clean them up a little more, but im really liking them now..... thanks for lookin! cheers bryan Edited October 5, 2012 by bryan_m
TooOld Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Looks like time well spent ! A little more cleaning and they will look excellent .
bryan_m Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 thanks Bob. heres a couple more shots.......they still need cleaned a bit more, but it will be well worth the effort. i shot this first one against a light so you could really see that the plastic is gone.. here it is mounted in a nice whitewall tire..... cheers bryan
bryan_m Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 Here they are tucked under a 59 impala, i am really liking them now. what a big difference a little work can make! time to do the other 3! thanks for lookin bryan
outragis Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Bryan, that must have been a hella lot of work! But the result is well worth it!
bryan_m Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 thanks Eric, it took me about 30 minutes with a dremel, sanding sticks, and files.......it wasnt too bad. cheers bryan
vintagedragfan Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 nice work Bryan, reallymakes nice set of wheels now!!
jcbigpaw Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) Hey Bryan those look great! How do you think theyr gonna hold up on the car? Are they really "delicate" or do you think they'll be okay. They turned out very nice. Good work. They really look like wire rims now m Edited October 5, 2012 by jcbigpaw
bryan_m Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 thanks guys! i have no idea what kit they came from, but i have 2 sets of them here. theyre not so delicate that they will break under the weight of a car, they should hold up really well. im workin on the other 3 now, so after its all said and done, ill have about 2 hours in all 4 of them.....thats worth it i guess. cheers bryan
Ramfins59 Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Those look really awesome Bryan. Glad to hear that you're NOT still swallowing stink bugs... LOL.
bryan_m Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 thanks Rich! my throat n nose are still on fire from that!! these wheels sets have 2 deep, and 2 shallow wheels, unfortunately the shallow ones are way too delicate to do this too......i knocked about 5 of the spokes off of one of them, but thats ok, ill just use 4 deep ones! cheers bryan
bryan_m Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 thanks Rob! i think the problem on the second one was that i had the dremel turned up too high, and heated the plastic too much while sanding......ill try it again on a shallow one and see what happens.... cheers bryan
dimebolt Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Nice wheels Bryan. A little work does go a long way. Corey
bryan_m Posted October 5, 2012 Author Posted October 5, 2012 thanks corey. yea a little work does go a long way... i have used that same technique on quite a few grilles as well, and they look so much better sanded out! cheers bryan
Psychographic Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Talk about a Silk Purse from a Sow's Ear! Great job.
BluePopsicle Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Looks great Bryan! Want to do mine next? haha
Gluhead Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I did the same thing a couple months ago, Bryan. They're from the '53 Ford flip nose. And yep, if you're lucky enough to get a set with decent chrome, they look da mned sharp with a little work. Who'da'thunkit, eh?
Yahshu Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Nice work. You'll also find them in the MPC 57 flip nose chebby.
lanesteele240 Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I like the way you made the 4th wheel dissapear
Joker Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Wish I'd seen this before Bryan. Yes ..the '53 Ford truck is the donor kit All I did was add a black wash to mine. Saved for future reference.
JasonFL Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Wow, what a defference. I don't think I would of had the stones to attempt anything like that. Very nice
