Custom Hearse Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I tried using the decals from the '73/'74 Road Runner kit (new issue), and they completely fell apart. First they cracked apart, then they just fell into pieces. I've never had this many problems before, and now I'm worried about using the decals from the recent issue of the 352 Peterbilt cabover...
disabled modeler Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Marshall....I had the same thing happen to my 74 Plymouth kit and the Gremlin ones they both did the same thing????
cobraman Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I had a little problem with the snakeskin decals in the current Cobra kit. When in doubt coat the decals first. It will save you a lot of headaches.

Custom Hearse Posted April 7, 2013 Author Posted April 7, 2013 Do you coat it on the paper? All I did was put it in water and pull it out, and it was disintigrating right on the paper...
Casey Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 You shouldn't need to apply a clear coat to a new decal sheet to get them to work correctly. Something is wrong with the decals is this is a frequent and repeated problem with Round2's decals. Has anyone here contacted them and let them know their is a problem with their decals?

cobraman Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I use the Micoscale product. It works great. I have had this same problem with some Slixx decals. They sent me a bottle of the Microscale product and some extra decals. They told me that there was a batch of decals that did not coated. I have used the Testors spray decal coating as well and it works good too. I agree that you should not have to coat a new set of decals but you don't know before you use them and then it stalls your product because you have to contact the mfg. for a new set.
Art Anderson Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 You shouldn't need to apply a clear coat to a new decal sheet to get them to work correctly. Something is wrong with the decals is this is a frequent and repeated problem with Round2's decals. Has anyone here contacted them and let them know their is a problem with their decals? I've had the very same thing happen a time or two over the years. A little background here: If you look at a sheet of decals, you should see at least a bit of a clear "surround" around every decal (older decal sheets had a clear film all over the sheet), on top of which the graphics are printed. If that clear film, printed first before the graphics went on) is missing, and you cannot detect any clear film whatsoever, clear coat your decal sheet before you use it! The printed graphics aren't anywhere near thick enough to withstand any sort of handling without disintegrating. I've always solved that situation by spraying a light coat of clear lacquer (Modelmaster, indeed even the Wet Look both work) right over the decals, graphics and all. Once dry, cut out the decals, apply as usual. It's worked every time for me. Art
TooOld Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I agree 100% with Art , if you look closely you can see the clear film . I rarely use decals but learned my lesson long ago , now if I have any doubts about their condition I always coat them with Testors Decal Bonder or any clear lacquer . There's no sense in taking a chance even with supposedly new decals .
Custom Hearse Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 They have been contacted Mike, did they ever respond to you about the problem? I have never had any decals this bad. Thank you everyone who told me how to fix the problem, I will definitely have to try the suggestions. On the lacquer, is there any certain brand? I know lacquer is a hot paint, and I'm curious if there is a certain brand you use. Thanks again!

I've used a few sheets of their decals over the last few years and haven't experienced the problem you're having, but I forwarded this thread to someone at Round2 yesterday, who will be passing it along to the factory. I've been using old Testors Glosscoat for years on older sheets.
slusher Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Yes, spray the clear right over the decals on the paper in light coats, a couple should be enough. Yow will of course have to trim them before soaking them. Thanks that is good info....
