Chillyb1 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 For painting the taillight housing, I would jam clay in the back, and then mask off the lens portion. This is exactly what I've done. I use poster putty inside the lens and then jam a toothpick into the putty to hold the lens. I cut the tip off of the toothpick first because if you use a pointed one there's a good chance the taillight will fall off (ask me how I know that!). I've tried liquid mask and tape and both have their drawbacks. They are both difficult to get them exactly where you want them, but I've found it easier to remove the tape. This will take plenty of patience, by the way.
LoneWolf15 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 J , Try using a piece of bare metal foil for your mask . I think you'll find it quite a bit easier to maneuver and easier to trim between the lens and the body of the taillight .

martinfan5 Posted April 26, 2013 Author Posted April 26, 2013 Did some work on the interior, flocked the floor and painted the seats
martinfan5 Posted April 29, 2013 Author Posted April 29, 2013 Here is the body with one coat of clear
Zarana-X Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 If you're really ambitious, there should be a thin crome bezel between the taillight lens and the housing. European style lenses have and amber turn signal on the top, US will be all red.
Harry P. Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Jonathan... the paint job turned out beautiful! And a perfect complement to the interior color you picked. Nice work!
Harry P. Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 BTW... Chilly, your Beetle is also beautifully done. I love the silver paint with the white wheels and tan interior. Perfect!
Chillyb1 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Paint job's not shiny enough! I love that interior color. It is exactly how I remember my dad's Type III.
martinfan5 Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 Thank you guys Didja gitter dun? Almost, but it aint pretty no more
Danno Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 The whole point is for it to be better looking when it's done.
rigbuilder Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I've for sure got to get me one of these kits. I am an avid VW fanatic. Owned 3 1:1's in the process of building a 1:24 old bug and looking to buy a 4th 1:1 old bug. The engine detail on this kit is unbelievable. That blue is gorgeous on your type1 and the white interior definitely compliments the blue. As I said ^ there I am working on a 1:24 myself with one detail I have never seen in the car modeling arena. Y'all will have to wait and see what it is. I'm keeping 100% secrecy on that detail. I want to see if I have the skill to pull it off. Anyway I'm post jacking. Unintentionally. Sorry. Great job on this build so far.
