Greg Myers Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I've noticed many of my older Revell kits that came in those awful ( I always wondered why everyone was so upset) " Donut" type boxes are popping open and spilling their contents all over. Now I'm wondering what the cure is. Yea, I know, pick up all the parts and put them back in the box. But what about the crumby falling apart donut boxes? I've tried 'contact cement' but I'm not sure how long that will last. What else is there, short of finding new (different) boxes? (Danno should love all these little faces )
Harry P. Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Go to the dollar store and get a bunch of those clear storage containers with the snap-on lids.
george 53 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 IF you have an old fashion STAPELER just staple them rascals together. If not Masking Tape them together.
FIREMODELMAN Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I've used masking tape on the INSIDE of the box before with good results. Keeps 'em closed and you can still get in them.
High octane Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 We call them "pizza" boxes and yes on some, I had to tape them on the inside with masking tape.
gtx6970 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Go to the dollar store and get a bunch of those clear storage containers with the snap-on lids. Yep, just picked up about a dozen of them for .99 each . each tub will hold two complete kits
Eshaver Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Short of buying stock in the nearest "Zip Lock " plastic bag company, I dunno what to tell ya to do . George had a decent suggestion though .................
Edsel-Dan Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Scratch 'Masking' tape and use Clear Package sealing tape like for shipping boxes. I use 2 inch wide. Also to Hide tape, you can use Double face, and place it INSIDE the joint. (Between the flaps, where the glue popped apart) I also re-enforce boxes by adding a layer of corrugated cardboard inside. This is good when stacking boxes on top each other!! And you can also place Loose parts in bags. I use ones from News papers, and zip-lock type. This will guarantee that if the box falls, or pops open for any reason, parts will not go flying all over!!
Austin T Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 I think who ever made those boxes was out for blood, because no one like those. Can't tell you how many times I have accidentally made sacrifices to the carpet gods.
slusher Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 My wife brought me home some safety glass boxes and l put the kits in them. They held 12 pair of glasses and are plain white and hold one kit. l am glad revell does not still use those boxes..
Dr. Cranky Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Go to the dollar store and get a bunch of those clear storage containers with the snap-on lids. Costco has a whole bunch, I think 14 of them, real cheap.
tooltas Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 the car test dumbie that came out them boxs need to go by by wtf revell
Greg Myers Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 Start building them... What are you, some kind a wise guy ?
Hollywood Jim Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 (edited) zenrat is correct. Build the model and throw the box away !!! That is how this hobby works. If your collecting kits for re-sale, don't open them. If you do open them use a stapler to fix the box. If your just saving empty boxes, let the box fall apart. That way you can store them in their flatened state. They take up much less room when they are flat. Hope this helps. . Edited May 16, 2013 by Hollywood Jim
1930fordpickup Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I just use good old white glue and put them back together . Seems to working so far. I also try to bag every kit I open. They sell those mini baggies cheap at the Crafts 2000 and such stores. 3x4 is a good size. You can get a hundred at a time, cheaper than zip locks .
martinfan5 Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 You can give them to me, I wouldn't mind at all dealing with the box's
Guest Johnny Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Not just a bad design but they were really cheaping out on the thickness of the card stock they were made from.
ffreak Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I've put most of mine in those clear rubbermaid type shoeboxes. Throw those awful boxes away, not even worth puttin donuts in !!
Greg Myers Posted May 17, 2013 Author Posted May 17, 2013 Thank you all for the great suggestions. I'm going with Danial's clear packing tape.
zenrat Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 What are you, some kind a wise guy ? Yep. So wise they made me a special coat that buttons up the back...
Skydime Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) Finish one in a normal box, break down the parts tree to size, and throw the contents in the normal box. Then label what it really is. Then come to think of it, most of the "donut box" kits were packaged or repackaged in a regular box at one time or another anyway. (Syclone, and Uptown kits immediately come to mind.) So, they should fit the way they are. Edited May 18, 2013 by Skydime
