Shelby 427 1965 Posted October 15, 2013 Author Posted October 15, 2013 Cheers! I think I'd literally DIE to have anything Shelby as a first car.

Zip ties are what holds the aftermarket used '88 grille on my current ride, a 1986 with 300k miles now (plastic odo gear broke right after I got it, so it sill says 86k. Yes, indeed, I would have rather had what I have now as a first car instead of the truck I had in high school. More fun than some ordinary boringmobile. I avoid going offroad for my Colorado vacations like I used to (a bit tough on vehicles not intended for such things), but mine is still a hoot to drive on the curvy paved roads. Remember to keep the shiny side up on yours, and you'll have many happy times. Edited May 1, 2020 by Russell C fixed busted photo link
Greg Wann Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 My first car was a 72 Buick GS. My first brand spanking new car was a 78 VW Rabbit. Not just any Rabbit. It was a special edition 'BIG FOOT " Rabbit. It had wide after market wheels and tires. Fender flares and a front air spoiler. It was a silver color and had a two tone red stripe running down the length of the car. I bet if you could find one of those in good condition these days it might be worth a bit. I had trouble with shift cables breaking. Driving the car in town without a clutch was interesting driving. It was my first manual transmission car. I drove it until 1987 when I bought a Mazda 626.
Tom Geiger Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Frickin plastic clips! I remember trying to change a headlight on my '89 Crown Vic. Yea, the horror of hearing every clip break as I tried to remove the plastic headlight surround. Same issue as I tried to change out the stereo on my 91 Geo Tracker. The plastic bezel literally shattered into small pieces as I tried to get it off. Dried out, sun baked plastic just doing it's thing! I guess these things were engineered to work for the first 5-10 years of ownership. Probably just until the 5 year note was paid off!
gwolf Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Hey man, how's the GTI doing? My first GTI was an MKII like yours, but white. I'm on my fourth one now. My favorite was my 97 1/2 VR6 in Ginster Yellow. Wish they made that the VR6 into a model kit. Give us an update.
Sixx Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Wow Tomo, you're doing an awesome job man! My first car was a 1970 Ford Maverick. 6cylinder, air shocks out back, & a ton of ”bondo" on the body!
Danno Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Wonder how it's going for Tomo and his restoration.
Shelby 427 1965 Posted June 28, 2014 Author Posted June 28, 2014 Wow, I didn't know how much of this I hadn't shown you guys! Well, she's finished now... I'll give a brief skim over. (The whole build is on the owner's club, feel free to check it out.. http://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=29718 ) Engine was serviced, and new clutch and stuff too. Painted the rocker cover. New door, painted the under arches, then new engine mounts, joints, wishbones (basically, the whole front end of the car? I spent a fortune and bought mostly all new stuff. Engine bay was welded up, and painted Tornado Red.. (I think I have pics of how it used to look on here?) Engine in... Hey, that's me! Everything in properly, and wired up... First fire up! You can tell, I was very pleased, hahah. No exhaust on it here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4zbWKxGdmo And then, disaster struck... (continues now, in a sec..)
Shelby 427 1965 Posted June 28, 2014 Author Posted June 28, 2014 So we lifted up the carpets... Bad news. Rotten. Looks like we needed a bit of repair work... Offending articles were cut out... But we didn't get the weather to sort it, so I got around to the other stuff... Before and after of the engine bay: Then finally, we got the weather to do the floors. So, new panels brazed in... Painted! then I painted the rear arches, and painted all the suspension components and brake calipers, front and back. A bit more moon action going on too... And then...
Shelby 427 1965 Posted June 28, 2014 Author Posted June 28, 2014 And then, interior back in, aaaaaand... She's finished! (well, this was only a light skim of all the work done, if ya wanna see more, click the link I posted...) Anyways, sorry I didn't update it as much as I'd like.. As you can see, I was a bit busy!!
moparfarmer Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 Didn't or don't have pictures to post...The first car was a 1965 Valiant Signet 2 dr ht..Three on the tree buckets and no console..Bought it for $1350.00 in 1968 and sold it for $2800.00 about six months later to my next door neighbors grand son..It was dark metallic blue, blue vinyl interior with full caps and w/w tires...Good looking car...Very reliable while I owned it and the guy who bought it had it for about 10 trouble free years...
Shelby 427 1965 Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 hahah, thank you.. I forgot to mention the Audi Quattro references/homages on there too. Same door handles, same paint code, both VAG... psh, practically the same car (I'll have a quattro some day...)
Kit Basher Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Awesome job, Tomo! Great to see it carried thru to the end. I bet you have a huge feeling of accomplishment. Enjoy your ride!
Shelby 427 1965 Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 Cheers! I shall... I turn old enough to drive in about a week or so, so I shall look forward to taking it out for a spin very soon
Dale W. Verts Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 (edited) Well sir- you've got my vote. A fifteen-year-old who likes cars and wants to work on them, and likes JIM CROCE? And classic ROCK? Absolutely the coolest thing I'll hear today. Love it! Dale Edited June 29, 2014 by Dale W. Verts
Shelby 427 1965 Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 (edited) Hahah cheers! 16, going on 17 actually (Wound up calling her Lara, after Lara Croft, in the end..) Edited June 29, 2014 by Shelby 427 1965
Lucas van H Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Looks great! A buddy of mine has the same car, but only an 1.3 litre engine which got a little bit more power thanks to a Golf 3 camshaft. One thing to look out for on these cars is the A-pillar. They rot very easily and if you're not repairing it straight away it can get very nasty very fast. Lucas.
Maindrian Pace Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 The car looks new Tomo, you are a motivated young man with uncommon focus. You did that whole job out doors, in the weather, under rain and sun, and on a surface that doubtless fought the floor jack every time. And to top it off, the car is cool, tasteful, and was worth the effort. Drive it with pride, you've earned it. -MJS
gwolf Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Nice GTI, man. Most of those MK2 GTI's are either in the hands of guys that have restored them or in the junkyard because they were wrecked when racing. I've had two of that model year, a white one and a black one. Next car was a '97 GTI VR6 Drivers Edition in Ginster Yellow. Newest one is an '08 GTI. Watch out for the heater core...car is virtually built around it. Congrats!
Tom Geiger Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Nice GTI, man. Most of those MK2 GTI's are either in the hands of guys that have restored them or in the junkyard because they were wrecked when racing. and Tomo your car would be a real head turner in the USA with the Euro spec and right hand drive!
Shelby 427 1965 Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 So since I was just reminded that I hadn't updated this in a long time, I figured I'd treat you guys... Well, first of all, it passed all of it's MOT/State Inspections without a hitch! Not bad after 8 years off the road. We took it to it's last show of the summer on Sunday... And on the way home...
Shelby 427 1965 Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 the other thing worth updating about was the 24th of August. I went to a Volkswagen drag day! I won two races, where I beat a 16V GTI and a Scirocco the morning before... My first race.. Us standing around it while trying to figure out how we can reduce some weight to go faster.. We found a way! Me, my best friend Conor on the left, his sister/my lady friend on the right... a rather good Pit Crew as it happens!
Shelby 427 1965 Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 (edited) Couple more shots... The 16V beating me in one of the earlier races, but I beat him in later one... Golf’s fastest was 17.1 second quarter mile, top speed of 79.23mph. My best reaction time was 0.223. pretty happy with that for my first time Video of me beating the Scirocco... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEcEYOTauw4 So that's the car basically up to date!
