Ramfins59 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Well I finally got a replacement body from The Modelhaus to replace the meltdown fiasco that happened previously. After soaking in a tub of Westleys Bleche White for a day or so, it is rinsed off and dried and any flash and slight imperfections removed and/or sanded. I also sanded off the wipers and door handles which I will replace with chromed pieces from my parts stash.. I still have to prime and paint the body but have to wait until the humid weather we're having here goes away. I'm using chromed reverse wheels on this car with wheel spyders (Modelhaus) which I painted Pink to match the car (Tamiya -TS125) This kit comes with a Continental kit which I painted Pink, applied BMF strips, and added a black, pinstriped rabbit. I started sawing and carving out some of the excess resin at the sides of the front seats and in the center of the seat backs to add a little more depth. I still have to do the passenger seat side. I'm debating whether or not to cut off the interior side panels to make it easier to detail them, but I'm not sure that I want to go through all of that... While I was waiting for this replacement body to arrive, I gave the grille a blackwash with the Detailer. put MV lens blue dots in the taillights, and tried to make the chrome headlights look a little better. I also painted and detailed the dashboard. Additional pictures of all this stuff will come in a day or so. Thanks for looking in on this. I'm hoping that the second go-around on this body goes well.
Joker Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Fingers crossed.. The Connie kit has that "East Coast Cool !"
Project510 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Looking good, nice detail on the BMF. Looks very real
Ramfins59 Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Thanks guys. I'm glad to be working on this car again. I can't wait for the humidity to drop so I can spray some primer and paint.
crazyjim Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Keep it going, Rich. Looks good so far. The keys for my Dad's '58 Chevy DelRay used to start a friend's Dads '58 Olds. We'd take it for a ride every once in a while. Lots of chrome on those puppies.
Ramfins59 Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Thanks Jim. Yeah I've got a bunch of new BMF sheets stockpiled for all the rest of the 50's car models and Promo's that I've got lined up to build. Hopefully this is gonna be another good building year for me.
Ramfins59 Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Yeah you're right Jim. I bought 6 new sheets when I was at NNL East back in April and I'm hoping that should last me for awhile.
Ramfins59 Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 HOORAY...!!! Mother Nature was finally nice enough to give us a BEAUTIFUL DRY DAY here and I was able to get some painting done. First of all, I shot the new Olds body with Duplicolor White Primer in preparation for tomorrow when I will spray it with Tamiya Pink (#TS-25). Hopefully all will go well and I will then be able to clearcoat it and then do the miles of BMF work. In addition, while waiting for a good painting day, I detailed the grille with The Detailer Blackwash, put some Tamiya Clear Red on the center emblem, and also applied some white acrylic to the turn signals. I also painted and detailed the dashboard with BMF and a super fine point Black artists pen. I was also able to paint a couple of other car bodies since the weather was so nice, but those are in another thread. Thanks for looking in on this.
Dr. Cranky Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Oh yes, I like the sides of this vehicle. Looking forward to more.
codie27 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 You're off to a great start with this. Its gonna look awesome once the foil is on the sides.
crazyjim Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 As I recall (over 50 years ago) that Olds had some gold on the rear side trim. Kind of like on a '57 Chevy.
Ramfins59 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Jim, I did a lot of Google searching for reference and detail pictures of '58 Oldsmobiles and I haven't seen any with gold rear side trim. I've seen a couple that had the areas between the rear trim pieces painted in a contrasting color, but no gold. That doesn't mean there weren't any though. Once I get the Pink paint on this body, and then clearcoat it, I'll tackle the BMF work which I'm sure will take awhile... Good thing I stocked up on new BMF sheets. The interior, chassis pan and convertible boot cover are soaking in Westley's right now. The interior colors will be Pink and Black.
slusher Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Nice job Rich, on the continentel kit, dash and grill. l am glad the weather is better. Have you ever gave in and painted one inside?? l have..
crazyjim Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Maybe it's just me, Rich. It has been 50 years or so.
60s era Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Rich.. Hey , like the 58....My dad bought a new 58 - 98 Convertable in 1958 . Black with red and white interior ,- J2 engine option.. ( three 2bbl Carbs) plus all avaliable options for that year.. They did not have second color between mlgs, but people did do that as my Dad did also, between top and bottom 1/4 moldings and between top and bottom moldings on front fender and door were painted white. That was a cool car back then,, will be following your progress closely.. Love the Old Boat....had good times in it, even though I was not old enough to drive I drove it anyway, once or twice without dads premission........ Tom
Ramfins59 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Thanks again everyone, I appreciate all the encouraging words. Carl, No I have never fully painted a model inside. I'm lucky sometimes being able to spray a couple of small parts in my basement work area without the women complaining about the paint smell.
Geno Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Looking awesome Rich, I also love the '58 cars, keep us posted.
Project510 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Nice job! Regarding the Wesleys bleche white.. I have never used resin before, but also read that you should soak it on another forum. Whats the purpose of this? Is it like washing the standard plastic kits in warm soapy water before building?
Ramfins59 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 James, the resin casters coat the mold with a release agent before pouring in the resin (like buttering a cake pan so the cake will come out easier). The release agent, or chemical if you will, remains on the outside surface of the part that was molded, and if that isn't removed properly, you will have problems like fish eyes, etc., in your paint job. Soaking resin bodies and parts in Westley's Bleche White (whitewall tire cleaner) for at least a day and then rinsing off with warm water and then letting them air dry will remove all of the release agent. Then you can prime and paint without any fish eye or other problems.
Tom Geiger Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 It's good to see you back on this project my friend! Hopefully this was another good paint day for ya!
Ramfins59 Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Thanks Tom. Yeah it was a good day. Yesterday I primed it with Duplicolor White primer, today I painted it with Tamiya Pink, and tomorrow I will clearcoat it. Tomorrow I can also start work on the interior.
