Harry P. Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I find internet advertising interesting. I haven't figured out the logic behind the ads on this site yet. Other ad services watch you and figure out ads that may interest you from your browsing or location. For instance I had helped my daughter buy a Fiat 500. I get ads for those. I also see ads for a local car dealer, no doubt due to my zip code. And the company I bought the NNL East pens from seems to be stalking me everywhere! Gregg is still tinkering with it. There may be a way to tailor the ads to more closely reflect forum members' interests. At this point it's a work in progress... refinements will be made. Give it a little time.

southpier Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 No you can't. The billboard chooses you. If you sell ad space, it's up to the advertiser to buy that space. You don't control which advertisers buy ad space, they do. You can only run ads for the advertisers that actually buy the ad space. It's true that you can decide to only accept ads from certain advertisers, but still, it's the advertisers that have to buy the ad space. It's their choice whether or not to buy the space. I guess I should have taken a foreign language instead of drafting.....
2000-cvpi Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Does anyone have any idea how the concept and/or perameters of Google Ad Sense works? Does anyone know how to tweak the codes, add campaigns that are geared to what you are working on, make sure that the relevant ads and/or sites can be betted before they are allowed to use the ads? Does anyone know how to set up a dedicated server, along with all the settings, profiles, zones, etc. that is involved with running your own dedicated server? I think not. I am doing the best I can, with Dave's help, and it's a steep learning curve. All I hear, except from Mr. Evan's southern hospitality, is nothing but complaints, complaints, and complaints. Anyone have an extra three grand a year they want to spend on running this? I think not. Thanks, James. It's a learning curve I'm trying to get a hold of and grasp. I read the other thread and I swear that there are some guys on here that only use a computer for this forum only. Is perfectly normal for any forum to have ads in the banner. Every forum that I frequent has them, for the same reason they are now here, to earn income for the site. Its silly to think that a ad could upset a grown man. To Gregg, thank you for all you do, I can only imagine the work that you have done to make things here better. Remember that it is easier for others to criticize than for then to help out.
Steven Zimmerman Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Apparently my attempt at humor fell fell flat. Let me be blunt. This is my favorite forum. Are there better out there ? Maybe...Are there worse?....Definitely....Do I care ?...Nope. I think everyone of us owes Gregg a BIG thanks for what he does for this hobby - AND us -And if you don't like the way things are done, don't let the door hit you in your....kiester. Frankly, I'm tired of hearing some of you whine, bitch, and just plain BULLY people when you think things aren't being run to your satisfaction.....GO !....LEAVE!...Start your OWN cottin pickin forum, maybe you might - MAYBE- find out how much time, effort and skill is involved. Tom Geiger Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Thanks "Z", very well put! Many thanks to Gregg!
slusher Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 l have no problem with any ads Gregg. Thank you for what you do.....
Guest Johnny Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 After a while you tend not to even notice them anyway.

Mike Kucaba Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 There are ads here??!!?? I could have sworn I was looking at a tutorial on Solar power for my models!! I'd better up my meds dosage!
turn1wonder Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Use adds please, but if I had to I would pay. A "members only" forum is not a "public" forum, use one or the other but having both dilutes both. Bob
charlie8575 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 A lot of the advertisements are triggered by your own browser's history, so whether Gregg and Dave tailor ads to interests reflected here (for example, ads from Revell or Testors), your own browsing history, as Tom illustrated, will also affect the ads you see- such as ads for cars or promotional items, or whatever else you might have been looking for recently. An easy way to cure this is to clear your browser history- frequently. Of course, you'll then get all kinds of bizarre things for a while, until the ad software re-learns your habits. Then there are the "spam" ads, as I like to call them. You all know the ones, the ones that start out with some cheesy line like "new (insert state) law allows you to save on car insurance," "one weird trick to do (insert action of choice)," and the like. Those are usually operated through Google or specific marketing firm using Google Analytics. I took a one-credit graduate seminar in Internet advertising, and the depth and reach of these practices is really quite shocking, and more than a little disquieting, and there really isn't anything we can do about it, except disconnect the Internet from our computers. Danno Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Charlie is dead-on correct. It is reality. Like or not. Just ask the NSA. Or, say it out loud ~ they'll hear you. The only real choice you have is to participate in life or not.

Charlie Larkin Um, yes there is, its called Ad Block Plus, and blocks all those pesky ads that clutter up the internet, that is the only way , but its a way and it works great, give it a try, you might like how much more enjoyable the internet is with out them Here are some links for you https://adblockplus.org/en/internet-explorer https://adblockplus.org/en/firefox https://adblockplus.org/en/chrome https://adblockplus.org/en/android https://adblockplus.org/en/opera http://safariadblock.com/ Edited August 2, 2013 by martinfan5
martinfan5 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 what do these ad blockers want in return? Nothing, free to use
Tom Geiger Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 what do these ad blockers want in return? There is no free lunch on the Internet. Once you install the ad blocker it's sending some data back to the mother ship. Heck, it could be worse than the ads you're blocking. And the big question. Ads on the board. Does the site get paid for each time the ad appears in a page view, just for the clicks, or a combination of both? AND, the big question... do the ad blocker guys negate the view income, thus work against the site?
MoparWoman Jamie Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 (edited) I talked it over with my wife and we both agree. If I had to choice to be a paid member for say $25 a year , or go some where else. I would gladly pay the $25 for a year as it would be worth it due to all the good stuff that is on this forum. Not ture, the ad blocking program is harmless, and is not going to do anything to your computer, now the ads on the other, can and do all the time, and for the record , I am not, I repeat not saying the ads that are on this site do. martinfan5 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 (edited) I guess its simple ,don't open the ads Either way works Edited August 2, 2013 by martinfan5

My brother said he gets a flat rate plus so much a click on any ads.(pennies) He said he did pretty well with it last year but it is down this year. Johnathon must be telling too many people about ad blocker! Hmmmm, I wonder.....

Guest Johnny Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I downloaded it and it got rid of the ads. Never knew that they slowed things down like that!
