Rob Hall Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 How do you have only two channels? That's impossible. If you are in a rural void without a dish or cable service, I could see that. My Mom in Ohio only gets two channels over the air (has a dish, though).
Harry P. Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 If you are in a rural void without a dish or cable service, I could see that. Seriously? In the US? In 2014? I didn't think it was possible to live in an area in the US that was so remote that you get only two channels. Seems to me that with a halfway decent over-the-air TV antenna you could pick up at least several signals, if not more.

Not necessarily..in hilly, rural areas, or in the mountains of Colorado, for example? When the nearest tv station is 200+ miles away, I could imagine not picking up much of anything. Distances are vast in the West and many states don't have very many cities big enough to have TV stations....look at a map of any of the southwestern states--I'm sure there are rural parts of Montana, Utah, Nevada, etc that can't get anything without a dish. I know in rural, hilly eastern Ohio when the dish is out my Mom only gets two channels w/ a rooftop antenna--both of which are about 50-70 miles away..can't even pick up Akron or Pittsburgh channels. But it's hard to imagine anyplace in the country that's 200 miles from a city... even a smallish city.

There are definitely places in the West like that..the population density is nothing like it is in Illinois... and even if there are stations closer, 12000-14000 ft mountains probably block the signal (it's not always flat out here.. David G. Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 That said, the majority of traffic enforcement officers allow for some "leeway" in how this applies. A string of cars travelling together, on the freeway, above the legal limit here is referred to as "going with the flow". The unofficial rule of thumb is a maximum of 15 mph over the posted limit before a stop is conducted. Now if I see someone travelling faster, changing lanes repeatedly and generally acting like an azz, well they get pulled over. That's not to mention applying make up, texting, eating a four course meal, etc etc etc. G When I was 16, a friend of my mother's who was an Ohio State Trooper took me out for some driver training and instruction. One of the more useful things he told me was that when driving, attracting unwanted attention is more often about how you're going fast rather than than how fast you're going. David G.

I guess you're right. It's easy to forget, living where I do, that there are still large areas of the country that are almost uninhabited. But still seriously surprised that even in the most remote place in the country you can't pick up at least a handful of signals. Maybe I'm just too "citified"...

Harry P. Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 There are big pointy mountains in the West. They block the signals, I think... In my defense... in Illinois, "mountains" are things we've only read about or seen in pictures...
Rob Hall Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 (edited) In my defense... in Illinois, "mountains" are things we've only read about or seen in pictures... Yeah, I spend most of my time in the flat urban sprawl, so mountains are always in the distance or seen from a plane. Once in a while I get out of the metro area and into the mountains..(though we do have a number of them within the Phoenix city limits). Edited August 27, 2014 by Rob Hall

Craig Irwin Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Having to be VERY careful here as to what opinions you express about current events. X2, the world is full of intolerance by people demanding tolerance today.

southpier Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 my two favorite wish list topics were locked. what hurt could they do? take up bandwidth or pixels or whatever it's called? yet all the while the "attaboys" are allowed to run rampant. good grief; what one has to endure for free. and Carstens is in the dumpster. that is all.

Harry P. Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Having to be VERY careful here as to what opinions you express about current events. The Off-Topic Lounge Musings, thoughts and comments on anything EXCEPT politics or religion! Come on, Rich. You know that if I left your comment up, it would turn into chaos in about five posts. If you want to talk about politics or religion, there are plenty of places for that, like Facebook or Twitter, for instance.
Harry P. Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 my two favorite wish list topics were locked. How many "wish lists" do we need, anyway? They're all the same, no need to have several different ones running at the same time.
southpier Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 but ... but .... we've got 150 pages of "that bad man drives too slow in my lane...." and that's news. reminds me of the day I was having breakfast in the local coffee shop. the group behind me had gotten their check. six seniors, and they're frickin' arguing about who owed 15 cents more because somebody had the Sanka. I wanted to rip the check out of their hands and pay it myself just to shut them up. only reason I didn't was because I thought news would spread and their friends would surround me everytime I went there to eat!
Ramfins59 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 We've also got a share of postings about Hobby Lobby and their Christian policies and/or beliefs...... and that's News too.
Harry P. Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 but ... but .... we've got 150 pages of "that bad man drives too slow in my lane...." That's one thread. Just because people keep it alive is no reason to lock it. We have several "I wish they would make a kit of this" threads... all the same identical topic. It's silly to keep them all open. There's a difference between one topic that lives on and several topics on the same exact subject.
southpier Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 so no more '32 Fords, rat roasters, or woodys then?
southpier Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 but in all seriousness - firearms instructor killed by 9 year old girl he was teaching to use an automatic weapon. who's more stupid: girl's parents or instructor? we don't want little buttercup to use an Exacto knife, but he can use a firearm ..... ? c'mon, people ...
unclescott58 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Sometimes I just have to poke the bear. I know it's not always the brightest thing in the world. But here I go! That's one thread. Just because people keep it alive is no reason to lock it. We have several "I wish they would make a kit of this" threads... all the same identical topic. It's silly to keep them all open. There's a difference between one topic that lives on and several topics on the same exact subject. It's all okay Harry. It really doesn't hurt anything in the long run. I really don't understand the difference. Nor do I care. As long as people enjoying what they're doing and hurting others, who cares? Scott
Guest Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 (edited) Anybody up for some music?.... If you think this sounds like Harry Chapin's "Taxi" you would be right. If for some reason this doesn't go over very well with the Boss, tell him it was just an attempt at a little fun... Anyways, here goes...It was raining hard in Hilo I needed one more fare to make my night A guy up ahead waved to flag me down He got in at the light Oh, where you going to, my modeling building dude It's a shame you ruined your Dukes Charger in the rain He just looked out the window He said, "Sixteen Kahuna Lane" Something about him was familiar I could swear I'd seen his face before But he said, "I'm sure you're mistaken" And he didn't say anything more It took a while, but he looked in the mirror And he glanced at the license for my name A smile seemed to come to him slowly It was a sad smile, just the same And he said, "How are you Harry" I said, "How are you Gregg" Through the too many miles And the Hobby Town aisles I still remember you It was somewhere in a fairy tale I used to moderate the Forum We learned about models on the hood of a Dodge The lesson hadn't gone too far You see, he was gonna be a Kahuna And I was gonna learn to draw He took off to buy more models And I took off to find more ink There was not much more for us to talk about Whatever we had once was gone So I turned my cab into the driveway Past the gate and the fine trimmed lawns Then he said, "We must get together But I knew it'd never be arranged And he handed me twenty dollars For a two fifty fare He said, "Harry, can you make change?" Well, another man might have been angry And another man might have been hurt But another man never would've let it go I stashed the bill in my Aloha shirt And he walked away in silence It's strange, how you never know But we'd both gotten what we'd hoped for Such a long, long time ago You see, he was gonna be a Kahuna And I was gonna learn to draw He took off to find more models And I took off to find more ink.......
