I too always have the radio on when building helps to relax me and I do build better in general. I listen to music or news also have a speaker in 3 of my building rooms.

Music..CD, radio or iPod. Occasionally, even the odd cassette! :)

I was in kmart the other day and was excited to see a sony "boom box" that included a cassette recorder. I never had to ask what an 8 track or record was when i was little. i knew i as getting old when my 9 year old asked me what a cassette was. lol

On topic, i am usually taking or waiting on phone calls while i build cause i work at home.

There is no silence in my world. As I've gotten older I have developed a chronic ringing in the ears. I need music, a sporting event or something playing in the background to try and mask the steady hum.

Wow, interesting contributions guys! While several responses are opposite from each other, I've done all at different times! I've had my chaotic noisy days at work where I've built in silence at home. I've also had nights with Slipknot or Korn blaring. Seasons play a part too. Nothing like listening to some vintage Jazz during a snowy night. My bench is next to a window in the spare bedroom I use and with just the swing down hobby lights on I can get a nice view outside. Summertime, when my neighbors are loud (which happens in Queens constantly....) and the windows are open, is when your more likely to hear volume in the hobby room. I use Pandora and my range of stations is varied. While I'm not a TV person, I'll sometimes listen to what my Wife is watching downstairs if it's something informative as opposed to entertainment. But then again, if she's baking or house cleaning and has the home theater cranked, well... then I listen to what ever she's listening to!

And of course, I share floor space with a 110 lb. dog that has to be at my feet at all times.....

Naw you can keep the 40's give me some machine gun kelly mac miller or some pastor troy anyday

That works too. ;) Im pretty much all over the board. No disrespect to anyone that listens to them but, the only things I can't stand are country, classical, and boy bands. Well, come to think of it...some southern rock and country are interchangeable, and short periods of classical are ok too. But DEFINITELY, NO BOY BANDS!

I heard Cee Lo Green naming off rap artists from Texas the other night and I was like, "You forgot Mike Jones and Paul Wall."

Now when it comes to building, it's all in what kind of build I am doing. Something muscle from the late 60's and the 70s, most likely some classic Kiss or something like that. Lowriders, definitely Dr Dre or War or generally anything with a smooth rap or Latin vibe will work. Trucks, I build slammed to the ground, so, nothing but modern metal. I try to surround myself with the commonly associated rhythms of what I am building if I get to listen to music.

You know, it's funny. Girls always fall for the boy band trap but, of all the boy "bands" I have been forced to sit through when my wife won't let me FF the dvr, I have NEVER watched a single member of those groups play an instrument. Wouldn't that make them, boy singers like that Beaver, Bieber, Beaver Cleaver, or whatever the kid's name is? (Side to self: Don't ever insult Leave It To Beaver like that again. Jerry Matthers might track me down and slap me silly!)

Actually I build with nothing going on if I'm alone down in my basement... no music, no TV. I listen to myself think and don't mind my own company. When family members are home I hear them and whatever music or TV they may have on. I enjoy the peace and quiet and usually get a lot more accomplished without any distractions or interruptions.

Same for me, my work area is in the basement also and I like the peace and solitude!!

I have a boom box on my model desk for the times I want to hear music via CD or cassette or listen to a baseball game or catch a car related program but mostly I work in silence.Sometimes my cat will be down there with me for company(for him mostly) or he'll come down and meow for me to come upstairs because it's late.

If the TV is on, I watch it and forget to build. I never bother to turn music on. I guess I'm in the "silence is beautiful" crowd.

Reminds me of the Groucho Marx quote:

I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go to the other room and read a book

I can't do TV but i need the radio on for background noise...IDK, after 10 years of being armored recce, silence kinda creeps me out! :P

Beiber can play several instruments....and quite well, too.

this went in a different direction than I thought. seems more guys work in silence than to music. I actually have a turntable and 400+ albums I used to play. no computer, no tv, just an old boombox cd player and my turntable in the room. in the summer time, there is nothing like building to an Indians game (I will be listening and hopefully building tonight), but mostly build to silence now., I do all of my building after everyone's fast asleep.

You do know that Beiber is really Canada's retaliation to the States for Miley Cyrus right?:D:lol::D:lol::D

It just depends on the mood I'm in. I like music sometimes, sometimes I want silence. Sometimes my wife will sit in the living room with me and read. It's all good. :)
