Ron Hamilton Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 A few months back, John Dezan posted a link to the restoration of this car, which is proported to be the last Hemi-powered '71 Dodge Charger built back in the day. The company which restored this car did a wonderful job. I do not have the funds to afford such a beast, but I thought that I could reproduce it in plastic, using AMT's excellent 1971 Dodge Charger R/T kits (Replica Stock and Street Machine), some scratchbuilding (Front Bucket Seat and rear seat upholstery patterns, and Center Arm-rest Cushion), some kitbashing ("Tuff" Steering Wheel, Bucket Seat Shells, and steel wheels), and some resin parts from Missing Link Resin (Dog Dish Hub Caps, Bazooka Exhaust Tips, Hideaway Headlamp Grille). I think I came pretty close to the real car, with the exception of the Dual Sports Mirrors and the Bumper Guards, and I added a set of Maryland license plates.
Harry P. Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 Very nice work. But the sport mirrors are a big part of the car's look... can you dig up a pair from the spare parts box?
rv1963 Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I think you did a great job, my opinion the best looking charger of all.
Ron Hamilton Posted October 20, 2013 Author Posted October 20, 2013 Very nice work. But the sport mirrors are a big part of the car's look... can you dig up a pair from the spare parts box? I agree with you about the mirrors. There are no exact duplicates of those mirrors in scale. When I did the '74 Road Runner, I scratchbuilt a set of them. I started on a set for this one. I have to work on them a little more, and I may install them if I can get them to look right. I have some touch up to do to it.
bbowser Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Excellent rendition of the original, outstanding.
peekay Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Beautiful replica Ron, you really nailed it. The Road Runner too - wonderful!
Dragline Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Looked great in person at the MAMA meeting Ron. Looks just as good here buddy. Bob
Shardik Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 VERY nice! That's probably the nicest Charger I've seen here. I agree about the mirrors; they really add something on the 1:1. Judging from your Roadrunner, they shouldn't be much of a challenge for you.
KevinMoparFord Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 I think good source to get the mirrors is the 68 Vette 2n1 kit. The custom mirrors are close and you do no have to trash the kit becuase the stock Vette mirror is also in the kit, and yes you get 2 sport looking mirrors. I used these on my Gremlin kit. Awesome job on the 71 Charger. I have seen the real car in person and I think you hit a home run on the model looking like it.
charlie8575 Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Excellent work, Ron. A very nice rendition of a historically-important car. Charlie Larkin
