vwdave92 Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 OK I know… not really a HOT subject but it was my brother's first car. The kit is a notch back and I need to convert it to a hatch. What are the odds anyone has pulled this off and has some advice? Thanks in advance
Casey Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 I think someone tried it once, but I've never seen a completed citation hatchback model. I wish there was one, too, as I have a soft spot for '84-5 X-11 hatchbacks.
Erik Smith Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 There was a WIP at one point - no idea if it was finished or when it occurred...
Pro Wrench Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 I thought one of the companies made a Citation X hatch?
Kennyboy Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 The way I would go at building a hatch Citation would be to pick up a Cavalier of the same vintage. The hatch on the Cavalier is VERY close to the X11.

The hatch on the Cavalier is VERY close to the X11. I looked into doing that when I had both a 1/24 Monogram Citation coupe and a 1/25 MPC '81 Cavalier body on hand, but they weren't close enough IMHO, and lots of scratchbuilding would be required on the body and interior.

Casey, do you think it was the difference in size that a played a part? Between 1/24 and 1/25? I have run into issues trying to mix the two scales in the past......I wish sometimes they would have picked one scale and stuck with it.

I would say yes, the scale difference is one hurdle. The difference is actually quite large between the two cars - the 1/24 Citation is a good 1/4 inch wider than the 1/25 Cavalier. Seems the Citation is a big 1/24 or cavalier is a small 1/25. Edited November 11, 2013 by Erik Smith

That was one factor, but the angle of the hatch, the rear window opening size/shape, the tail lights and tail panel-- all different enough to justify starting from scratch IMO.

carrucha Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) Looks like you are going to have to do a lot of scratch building on this one. There is a build thread on Scale Auto magazine's forum. Here is the link: http://cs.scaleautomag.com/sca/modeling_subjects/f/35/t/67905.aspx?sort=ASC&pi209=1 I plan on doing this conversion also to replicate the 1981 Citation my parents drove when I was a kid. Beyond the difference in scale between the Monogram Citation and an MPC Cavalier--check me if I'm wrong here, but in real life, is not the Cavalier a smaller, narrower car than the Citation? Art

Art Yes, the Citation was an X-body, the Cavalier a J-body..smaller, narrower.
Tom Geiger Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Gotta admit that this conversion is really cool! I think the 4 door Citation is more in people's experience than the two door. I remember friends of ours having the 4 door.
Eshaver Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 The only thing lacking is a convenience store back drop !
vwdave92 Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 WOW… I really wasn't expecting a response LOL. Let alone someone else crazy enough to pull it off. I cut the body at the end of the roof line and the in front of the fin which is part of the X-11 package. I guess I'll just start scratching until I have something. I'll get some progress pictures up in a couple of days. Truth is I started this a few years ago but just didn't have the chops… I'm thinking maybe skill wise I'll be able to get it now...
