Harry P. Posted November 25, 2013 Author Posted November 25, 2013 what the deuce is a "Juke" anyhow ? A contraction of "Junk" and "Puke" ?? Now that's funny! But I think it's actually a contraction of joke and puke...

niteowl7710 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 (edited) Now that's funny! But I think it's actually a contraction of joke and puke... Nissan hoped to sell about 1,300 of them a month, the initial order for the first month was 10,943 of them. In the first four months alone they sold 67,500 of them globally. Might not be certain people's cups of tea, but they've sold a whole ton more than they ever planned on doing. Edited November 25, 2013 by niteowl7710

Slick salespeople with their kiosk cologne and genuine roach skin shoes , appealling to a techno-driven , age 40 & younger market , whose primary interest is , "Can I voice-text my future-ex girlfriend with this 'Witcha-didya' , while jammin' out to Robyn Thicke's latest jam "Twerkin' for the Troops" , while sippin' on my mixed cafe drink and scoffing at the guy next to me whose Marlboro Red smoke is being filtred-through the cabin air filtre ?" . That is why so many were "sold" (most-likely , an "incredible lease offer" ) . How else could these magnified-beach-bathroom-gnat things seem *appealling* ?

Speaking as a non-techno under-40 something (don't believe how non-techno I am? Ask Mr. Duff or Mr. Geiger, they've actually met me!), I'm with you all the way, John. "Juke," at least in American parlance, by the way, is actually a word used in a dialect spoken in parts of the islands off the Carolinas, and means "confused" or "crazy," hence "jukebox," which, with the mechanical arm slinging records, albeit in a carefully-controlled manner, and the movement within the machine, it looked like it was going nuts. Come to think of it, given the definition of "juke" and the, ahem, styling of the Nissan sharing the name...yeah, it does kind of fit, doesn't it? Charlie Larkin

Charlie Larkin I had no idea that the name "Jukebox" had its roots in demographic slang ! That's a nifty nugget of info ; I'm planning to perturb my coworkers with that anecdote tomorrow . As a side note ; isn't one of Nissan's assembly facilities in Tenn. ?
Harry P. Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 I had no idea that the name "Jukebox" had its roots in demographic slang ! From wikipedia: The term "jukebox" came into use in the United States around 1940, apparently derived from the familiar usage "juke joint", derived from the Gullah word "juke" or "joog" meaning disorderly, rowdy, or wicked.[5]

Incredible showing of your belly-button sir, glad you have one like the rest of us...although yours seems to scream "LUDDITE" at the top of it's lungs. Is the styling a love it or hate it proposition. It sure is... Incidentally Juke non-withstanding, the Cube -- which was brought here to compete with the likewise boxy and dubiously styled Honda Element -- was on the market in Japan for 10 years before it ever was officially sold in the U.S. & Europe. Sales of it, unlike the Juke, have been dismal and it's actually been pulled from European markets. Proving that styling for Japan, doesn't necessarily sell elsewhere. Also Nissan operates 2 assembly lines (Smyrna,TN & Canton, MS) and 1 engine plant (Decherd, TN) in the U.S. All of which are running wide open to keep up with the demands of those so easily distracted cologne-intoxicated techno-driven customers Nissan has to fight off with a stick since their running out of factory capacity. That more-or-less squares with what I remember. Charlie Larkin
Joe Handley Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Now that's funny! But I think it's actually a contraction of joke and puke... The younger daughter of the owners of my store has one of those, and whenever I see it parked next to my Cherokee all I can think is "I can't believe that those two are related!" (via Renault). And speaking of choke, when she told me her's was a nearly $30k vehicle, I nearly did choke........and again when she told me that because it has AWD, it only holds 11gallons of gas! Keep in mind, my 200 cost less than that with the lifetime extended warranty, and my usual fill up on the 200 (16.9 gal.) as well as my Jeep (20.5 gal.) after a week of driving (depending on what I'm driving that week) are usually more than what that thing holds!
