Casey Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Here's the place to post pics, discuss the 1:1 car's options, and post and collect information for use when building Revell's '70 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda.
1972coronet Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Thanks very much for this most joyous news , Tim ! With a back story like that , this kit becomes even more impressive ; the change-of-ownership ; the "Black Friday" of 2008 ; the remergence ; the present day . I just hope that the nay-sayers recognise and appreciate the amount of R&D involved in producing not only this gem , but the many other long-awaited diamonds as well . And , as an added bonus , the $200+ MPC Annual 1970 Barracuda will severly decline in "value" !! It's refreshing to see a Dana 60 in its proper place ! That 1982 Monogram kit and its Hemi / 4 Speed / 8.75" rear combo bugged me since its release ! Now , in recognition that the kit manufactures follow / participate in this forum , I wish to *suggest* the addition of the Mod Top pattern to the decal sheet ; and , some *correct* California license plates , too ( blue / gold 1970 - 1980 series ). I'm definitely vying for you , Revell ! You've come a long way since your Venice , Ca. , days ! Thanks again , Tim
LDO Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Whoa. Mod Tops. That would be SO cool. Someone has to do it, whether Revell or aftermarket.
Longbox55 Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 It's refreshing to see a Dana 60 in its proper place ! They're bringing out a 3/4 ton '55 GMC???? Seriously, though, that's one that that irked me about the old Monogram kit, too. Or worse, the "Dana 60/Ford 9"/ whatever it was" differential from the old JoHan kit. Side note, the Spicer/Dana 60 was more commonly used as a light truck differential, mostly as a full float rear axl in 3/4 ton and single wheel 1 tons. GMC, IH, Ford, Dodge, and even a few Chevrolets used them. It was also common in 1 ton 4x4s as a front axle, and can still be found under most 3/4 and 1 ton vans in semi and full float variants. The Dodge/Plymouth Hemi cars were the only passenger car application of this axle (I have hears rumors of 440 cars with it as well).
slantasaurus Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Whoa. Mod Tops. That would be SO cool. Someone has to do it, whether Revell or aftermarket. Decals by Lucas is or at least was doing Mod Top decals in at least 2 colors.
1972coronet Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Decals by Lucas is or at least was doing Mod Top decals in at least 2 colors. Not to diminish Lucas' contribution to the hobby , but if the kit included a separate decal sheet including a top and seat insets* , that would be even better , in my opinion . *= while the Mod interior was only available with the bench seat (as far as I've seen) , it would be nice to make a "phantom" bucket seat version .
Casey Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 *= while the Mod interior was only available with the bench seat (as far as I've seen)http://www.mooresmop.../modtop110.html I think a Floral Top decal would be very hard to install given the flat nature of a decal and the compound curvature of a roof, but maybe with enough decal softener it would work.
Bruno Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 The Dodge/Plymouth Hemi cars were the only passenger car application of this axle (I have hears rumors of 440 cars with it as well). 440 Six Pack cars equipped with a 4spd
1972coronet Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 440 Six Pack cars equipped with a 4spd Dana 60 = Standard : 440 / 4-speed ; 440+6 / 4-speed ; Hemi / 4-speed ; 1969 1/2 Six Pack Super Bee & Six Barrel Road Runner (regardless of transmission ; all had 4.10 gear). Optional (i.e. , "Track Pak" & "Super Track Pak" w/ 4-speed and "Super Performance Axle Package") 3.54 and 4.10 gear ; all with "Sure-Grip" : TorqueFlite-equipped 440 , 440+6 and Hemi. 1966-1972* *= 440 Magnum & Super Commando only ; 3.54 gear only ; 1972 Six Pack & Six Barrel w/TorqueFlite only and 8.75" rear only .
Chuck Most Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 http://www.mooresmop.../modtop110.html I think a Floral Top decal would be very hard to, um, install?, given the flat nature of a decal and the compound curvature of a roof, but maybe with enough decal softener it would work. Doing it in more than one piece might be workable- sides and top maybe, but with the Mod Top you'd need to pay attention to getting the patterns on the pieces to line up.
Chuck Most Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I don't think a decal or sectioned decals would cut the mustard, replicating the mod-top. I'm sure there's more than 1 or 2 enterprising after-market companies that would be able to replicate the mod-top, in some sort of vinyl/other similar material? Obviously there's no doubt, reading the comments here about it, that they would sell it like hotdogs at a baseball game. I'd be interested too. Dan Exactly what I was thinking. The multi-piece decal would bring up that potential alignment issue, and that would be a deal-breaker for many. Thin, self-adhesive vinyl would seem to be perfect, then it would just be a matter of 'getting the hang of it', as applying such a graphic would be different than your typical waterslide decal. There'd absolutely be more than enough demand for somebody to at least try it out.
gtx6970 Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 (edited) 440 Six Pack cars equipped with a 4spd Any Dodge or Plymouth E and B body 440 + Hemi cars 1966 thru 1972 had the Dana 60 rear axle be it 440 four barrel, 440 six barrel or 426 Hemi Also, All Hemi equipped 1968 Dodge darts and Plymouth Barracudas also used the Dana if it had a 4 spd trans Edited October 8, 2012 by gtx6970
Bruno Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I got a few friends who build mostly racecars and they do wonders with waterslide decals, so much one piece decals that there's not much paint to see once finished. For example; complete carbon fiber hoods and all, using scale motorsports carbon fiber flat decal sheet, microsol, microset and a hair dryer. After seeing what these guys can do. I think a mod top can be done with waterslide decals.
charlie8575 Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I'm probably going to grab one of these just for the support. E-bodies aren't really my thing and Hemi-everything is a little overdone to me, but I do like what I'm seeing with this kit. With thoughts to the mod-top...the self-adhesive vinyl sounds like it might be an ideal solution to this problem. As Ertl used to say...just like the real thing, only smaller! I also wouldn't mind if they came out with the bench-seat; we need more of those and it would build the ultimate sleeper car, especially if done in some subdued colour like dark green or that soft metallic golden-beige with matching or black interior. gtx6970 Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Does the mod top not have seams like a vinyl top? If it does, the decals could be three separate pieces. Yes, same seams locations as a normal vinyl top
Guest Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I know for sure adhesive backed thin vinyl would work much better. You know those A4 sized folders you can get for a couple of bucks at any stationery store? That type of vinyl is perfect, you could even "warm" it up with a low-heat hair dryer to conform around the curvatures of any hood. Any interested after-market company would only have to print the vinyl & bam... Top seller! Dan The door numbers and flag on the roof of my General Lee are vinyl. The only problem could be once in place, there is no movement like a waterslide decal.
1972coronet Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 I think that the most difficult part of adding a vinyl roof to a hardtop would be making of the trim for the "C" pillar and Sailpanel . The top's material is naturally going to be flat , just as in the 1:1 world ! Has there ever been a case where a kit manufacturer included separate trim for a vinyl top option ? I think that that would be a viable idea , just like the separate side trim "spears" on the Revell 1958 Impala . As far as the seams on the roof , I believe that simply overlapping the decal sections would be convincing enough , no ? That's how it's done in the 1:1 realm
Harry P. Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Speaking of the Mod Tops, for those of you guys who think a decal wouldn't be able to snug down on the contours of the roof, what makes you think a piece of vinyl, which is even thicker, would be able to?

That's how it's done in the 1:1 realm I've never seen a kit with separate trim for the vinyl top (or second color roof paint) border, and it would have to be very thin to be in scale. It's not hard at all to add the trim to a body, though. Here's a '70 'cuda with the yellow floral top option. You can see the location of one of the top seams more clearly on the car to the left:
Harry P. Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 I have a pretty strong idea that if they ever were to offer a Mod Top, it would be as a decal, not a separate, die-cut vinyl piece. It's a matter of $$$. You can add another decal to the sheet for a lot less than outsourcing for the die-cut and printed vinyl appliqué.
gtx6970 Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 (edited) Really going to depend on the thickness and quality of the decal material in question. I tend to think it would be easier than it sounds, http://www.decalsbylucas.com/MOPAR_Mod_Tops.html As an FYI, there was at least ONE 1970 Hemi Cuda that came equipped with a mod top ( and it still exists today leading a pampered life ) http://www.mooresmop...m/modtop93.html Edited October 9, 2012 by gtx6970
VRM Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 A 340-6 would be appropriate for an AAR. The previous releases of AAR were also kinda 'funky' and Revell knows this. As for Mod Top - I've been unhappy with the ones currently available, so..... Oh, and decals work very well for vinyl roofs - I do them in 5 parts. I use low tack masking tape to make a pattern for each section. First is the A pillars, then the outer sections including the sail panel, then the centre section. Apply them in that order and give them a coat of semi clear. If a car does not originally have a vinyl roof, just make one with the smallest Plastruct half round for edge trim, end a thing strip of plastruct for the seams. Steve

gtx6970 Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 LOL Craig! I was thinking one for the Hemi, and one for a small block....but the chassis has the 'Hemi only' torque boxes. Although torque boxes 'are supposed to be ' A hemi only thing, it's been well documented they showed up and numerous drivetrain options . So technically they are correct on at least some cars, including 340 cars
Rob Hall Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Those mod tops are wild..never seen one in person. My MPC '70 Cuda was builtup in orange w/ a well done black vinyl top when I got it.
