I.ve seen this video before. It's funny to watch a hundred year old steam tractor out pull the latest version on the market today. But then again there's nothing quite like steam to get the job done. The desiel machines that are made today are just safer, and more convenient to use on the farm. Also a lot faster.

The steamer was stock. Looked like a Case. The John Deere was modified and it's torque band was changed. I'll bet if the JD was stock, it would have fared better against the steamer. Still would have been beat, but it would have taken longer.

That steam tractor would be handy to pull other tractors around the farm backwards. I bet the JD can get a lot more work done.

I wonder what the weight difference is?

Great video! Someday, before I die of old age, I would like to scratchbuild an old steam engine, or a Rumley Oil Pull as a load for an old truck (Maybe a 1926 Mack?)

I do think that the angle of the tow strap was helping the steamer too... Still would have beaten it with pretty much any setup, though.

The key to this one is traction. Once the John Deere's tires started spinning, it was all over. No matter how much power you have, if you can't get it to the ground, it's useless.

The "John Deere" is obviously built only for tractor pulling, it's not a real agricultural tractor. While I'm not sure what class its pulling in it likely only weighs between 4 and 5 ton depending on it's class rules, the steam traction engine on the other hand weighs at least 13 tons or more when comparing it to similar ones I have seen. A modern farm tractor of the same weight would be whole different story, Still a cool funny video and I'm glad you shared it with us.
