slusher Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Anyone off the farm, (or on the farm), will enjoy this! An 850 H.P. John Deere diesel vs. a steam tractor rated at 18 H.P? It's all about torque and traction… enjoy ...http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=FLQhvruimfs
uncle potts Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I.ve seen this video before. It's funny to watch a hundred year old steam tractor out pull the latest version on the market today. But then again there's nothing quite like steam to get the job done. The desiel machines that are made today are just safer, and more convenient to use on the farm. Also a lot faster.
lordairgtar Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 The steamer was stock. Looked like a Case. The John Deere was modified and it's torque band was changed. I'll bet if the JD was stock, it would have fared better against the steamer. Still would have been beat, but it would have taken longer.
PappyD340 Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 WOW, the old steamer didn't look like it was even straining, that was COOL!!
Kit Basher Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Torque, traction, and weight! The JD driver could have put it in four wheel drive, that would have helped. Still would have lost, tho. Cool video!
Old Nasty Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 There's a lot to be said for "old" technology.
Erik Smith Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) That steam tractor would be handy to pull other tractors around the farm backwards. I bet the JD can get a lot more work done. I wonder what the weight difference is? Edited December 19, 2013 by Erik Smith
mnwildpunk Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 A lot to to be said that with steam you have 100% torque all the time or so I have heard said before
Brett Barrow Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 World's most expensive (and inefficient) tiller.
DaveM Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Great video! Someday, before I die of old age, I would like to scratchbuild an old steam engine, or a Rumley Oil Pull as a load for an old truck (Maybe a 1926 Mack?) I do think that the angle of the tow strap was helping the steamer too... Still would have beaten it with pretty much any setup, though.
Dave Toups Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 The key to this one is traction. Once the John Deere's tires started spinning, it was all over. No matter how much power you have, if you can't get it to the ground, it's useless.
farmer1 Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 The "John Deere" is obviously built only for tractor pulling, it's not a real agricultural tractor. While I'm not sure what class its pulling in it likely only weighs between 4 and 5 ton depending on it's class rules, the steam traction engine on the other hand weighs at least 13 tons or more when comparing it to similar ones I have seen. A modern farm tractor of the same weight would be whole different story, Still a cool funny video and I'm glad you shared it with us.
