clovis Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Just curious...do you get tired of the limited selection on big scale models? I do. It seems like I look at the same models over and over again on ebay. I wish there was a step side pick up truck in 1/16. A '59 Cadillac would be even better than that. I am getting more excited about the new Revell issue of the Foose Camaro. At least it will be something new to look at on ebay, and will help break up the monotony of the AMT, Lindberg and Minicraft offerings. I am still surprised that Revell issued a 2010 Mustang in large scale. Was that new tooling? Is that the last time a new kit has been issued from new tooling? So, do you get bored with the current offerings? What do you wish was being tooled and offered in large scale?
Kennyboy Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 It is unfortunate that there is not more out there for larger scale builds, but I rarely build anything "out of the box" anyways....so I tend to buy a couple of built ups and create something one of a kind when I have the urge to build a large scale. I built the Revell 1/12 2010 GT500 as a "Super Snake." It is a GREAT kit for building a larger scale offering that is easy on the wallet.
disabled modeler Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Id be happy to find a complete good condition kit of the big bodied Trans Am to go detail crazy on...on my budget. I normally just do 1/25th scale but recently been wanting the challenge.
comp1839 Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 What do you wish was being tooled and offered in large scale? i'd take any of the '60's -'70's era muscle cars. especially in 1:8 scale.

LDO Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 There is a 1/16 step side pickup. Revell made a '73-...'80ish. I have a couple of glue bombs. There's a 1/12 scale diecast '59 Cadillac convertible and a 1/16 diecast '53 Eldorado. Things I would love to see in 1/8 styrene: '71 Barracuda with pro/street option '29 Ford roadster and Tudor sedan...if only a building option for the Big Deuce Pretty much any Duesenberg...pipe dream, I know
pharoah Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Yep. I like 1/8th scale models. I always wondered why they never made a VW beetle in that scale.Or an early Mustang, or a Ford Model A,or a 57 Corvette,or - you get the picture. I know they made 1/16th or even 1/12th,but it's not the same. I guess it all comes down to the same old thing - money. I'd like to see Monogram reissue the 1/8th Chevy engine from 1962 that they made ONE time.
DPNM Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 A lot here depends on which scale. Anything larger than 1/24-1/25? As said by LDO, there were two Revell 1/16th Step side Pick-ups. I have a couple ads up looking for them. They are the Swamp Monster and the Giant Tracks. A kit I'd like to see again is the MPC (early) Sportster, I have ads looking for that too. They had the "Then Came Bronson" bike but there was a stock issue also. Kits that were never made to my knowledge that I'd like to see: A 1/8 (or 1/6) Harley XR1000 or the late 70s XLCR Cafe Racer. How about at least an E-type Jaguar to go along with the Monogram 1/12th '67 Corvette? Or a Willys Gasser to go with the drag version of the same Corvette? BTW, why don't the doors open on this Vette??? A 1/8 Willys would be nice too, I believe they are available in resin. I think one determining factor may be that it takes an awful lot of plastic to make these larger scale kits. With the price of raw materials the MFGs are probably very wary of new tooling for them.
blunc Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Even though I've been gathering some 1/8 scale parts for future projects I'm going to play devils advocate here. There are several reason I can guess at for lack of large scale kits. 1. They're large..., not a whole bunch of shelf space in the home or the hobby shop for them 2. Cost to purchase, most builders see the price and decide they can buy three or more 1/25 scale kits and go that route 3. Cost to manufacture, making and maintaining molds for large scale may be very costly, imagine having flash issues on a large scale kit like we tolerate on old 60's and 70's era kits... 4. Large scale kits have inherent stability and durability issues due to the plastic used in casting, some metal or photo-etched parts would make for some more durable suspensions on large kits. One bright spot for large scale wishes is the 3d printers, if you can scale it then most likely someone can print it.
sjordan2 Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Shortly after the introduction of the 1/12 Mustang, I heard Revell's Ed Sexton on a podcast saying that the company was not interested in producing any further kits in large scale. He didn't go into detail, but I think we'll have to look elsewhere for more large-scale kits. A shame, since 1/16 is my favorite scale with more subject matter of interest to me. 1/12 is even better, but I don't want anything along the lines of American muscle cars or F1.

A shame, since 1/16 is my favorite scale with more subject matter of interest to me. 1/12 is even better, but I don't want anything along the lines of American muscle cars or F1. That is really disappointing to hear. I am new back to the hobby, and was hoping the '10 Mustang was the start of a new line of large scale. I would like to know what the story is behind the Revell Mustang. Did Ford "pony" up money for engineering and tooling? (Pun intended.) I can't imagine the cost of tooling for a large scale. I shouldn't complain, in fact, I'm the last one that should. I've bought exactly two models since I've been back to building, and one of them was a vintage kit I found on ebay. The other was new stock of a model that I think has been discontinued, and a retailer was dumping them cheap. Of course, I am an atypical model builder, and refuse to buy more kits until I have my current WIP complete. In a nutshell, they haven't made a dime's worth of profit from me yet, but I am seriously considering the Foose Camaro to build as a rusty junker.
pharoah Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I guess I'd better hang on the large scale kits I have then. Maybe even build them someday...
1972coronet Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I'm hoping that Round2 will release modified-reissues of the class AMT 1/16 scale '55 Nomad , '55 Bel Air , et al. What do I mean by modified ? - New custom wheels . The Cragar SS/T's are bland . - New tyres for the custom wheels . Those hideous snow tyres are junk ! The stock version's skinny Firestones are just fine (but a "flip-side" pad print would be cool , too : wide white on one side , an pinstripe white on the other). - Engine options . The turbo was okay for its time , but ... Perhaps the fledgling kit manufactures need to better promote any of their largeĀ® scale kits ...
jaydar Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Yeah, no road racer, can am cars, and no 1/12 427 Cobra. Joe.
cobraman Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Ah..... a 1/12 Cobra. There is an idea I can get behind. Actually, doesn't someone make one ? I seem to recall one that was bought in sections so you bought just certian items at a time so you could spread the cost. I recall it being very expensive. I believe it was all resin. Anyone know about this ?
Greg Myers Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 On ebay right now http://www.ebay.com/bhp/1-12-shelby-cobra KYOSHO , GMP . The Creative Explorer Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I've always wanted a '70 Superbird in 1/8th, I would even settle for a '69 Daytona, one can only dream..
