A pair of Lotus XI's

there was a resin kit available at one time; I bought one. it really improved over the merit kit in its wire wheels, while they weren't photo etch, they did have a good depth and look to them at least compared to the Merit kit wheels. ...

here are a couple of photos...

Cool! You wouldn't remember who might have offered it?

Crawling around the web I have found a curbside open cockpit version with Le Mans windscreen circa 1957 from Profil 24: http://www.profil24-models.com/model-kits-modeles-reduits/en/gamme-au-1-24e/62-lotus-xi-le-mans-1957-n41-42-62.html - expensive but quite handsome in the photos of it I have seen.

fantastic, I never thought I would see two of them together! and the open cockpit vs the closed one is interesting. did you cut that all out and construct all the detail? nice job!

Hi William,

Yes I did the cockpit cut out, detail and windscreen. It's not fantastic but I got as many interior shots as I could & constucted it out of various thicknesses of styrene sheet.

Bernard,

Repops did all the Merits in resin. I did a Google search here a while back and it appears all the moulds were sold on, there was a name on one of the forums but I can't remember who, sorry.

Dave

PS, my 2 Chinese toys are excat copies of the Merit body right down to the body panel lines being recessed, not raised. Quite a few Merits kits have raised boy lines

Hi Dave,

I just did some web searching. I guess "repops" was a resin caster. I just did some web searching based on this and the most recent references came from April, 2012. Apparently the molds and masters moved on to Tom Co0olidge and then to Keith Sorci operating as Colorado Resin Specialists from whom they were still available at that time. Srci has a Fotki page under the name "pourdog" and still does resin bits, but does not show the Merit kits. They appear to have been reproductions of the whole kits. The closest references I have found to the resin kits themselves are this blog page from 2008 on the Grand Prix Modelers Association (GPMA) sit which summarizes all the original Merit offerings and their rsin copies. It includes pictures of some of the resin kits.

Not only am I enjoying the workmanship shown on these forums, but I am pleasantly surprised at the interest in building vintage road racing car models.

Great stuff indeed!

Like vintage hot rods, it was a golden age of creativity and individual initiative unencumbered by the capital demands and abstract complexity of high technology. The goals to be achieved and the means to reach them were crystal clear. This makes the period accessible to the humble skills and modest insights of an amateur modeler such as myself... and makes them hard to resist.
