slusher Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I watch car shows, sports, and movies. no reality shows. I do read a lot on line and watch you tube movies I find. Watched Return to Macon County last week no commercials ...
charlie8575 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Well, I guess I'm in the minority here. I like TV. Yes, there is an amazing number of completely stupid shows on TV, but it's easy enough to just not watch them! I have never seen a minute of Honey Boo Boo, the Kardashians, Duck Dynasty, etc., etc., and don't plan to. But if you look past the trash, there is a lot of good stuff on TV. I love the PBS series "American Experience." Fantastic. A few years ago the British Granada Television produced an absolutely spectacular series of Sherlock Holmes episodes. And there's a lot more. I also like a lot of "mindless" sitcoms... great to just sit back at the end of the day and get a few laughs. And I'm a big baseball fan and watch the Sox a LOT during the season. Ditto for the Bears. You just have to be a bit discerning and look for the good stuff and look past the trash. I found there are some really good dramas on cable-only stations. I love Major Crimes and The Closer, I also enjoy Perception and Southland. I also like The Glades and Longmire. Where I live, the digital antenna doesn't work. We're behind a hill, and the digital signal doesn't like hills, so we had to get cable when they switched over. At least I can watch Looney Tunes and a few other things, too. And MeTV, which is also broadcast, has most of my TV time. Charlie Larkin

I guess I am as well, I will say, I hate 95% of the "reality shows", there are a few that, but what I do when I watch them, I treat them like movie, for the 20min/45 min's, I suspend belief for that time, and just take the show for whats it worth. I watch most of the primetime shows on CBS, I watch the sitcoms on ABC, I dont watch NBC/FOX for primetime other then Sunday nights. There are a lot of great drama's on the cable/sat outlets that I enjoy watching, while I do agree, most of the time, but most of the programming is aimed at the lowest common denominator of society . My main need for Satatlie is racing, at loss since NewsCorp switch SPEED over that the joke of Fox Sports 1/2, so I now have to stream other racing, no biggie, I also download TopGears new episodes a few hours after the episode as air in the UK, and then watch it on my TV.
Harry P. Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 And MeTV... I love MeTV! Not to be confused with MTV...
Craig Irwin Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I love MeTV! Not to be confused with MTV... Moron T V ?
charlie8575 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I love MeTV! Not to be confused with MTV... MTV....something I never got into. I got plenty of odd looks during my childhood/teen years. Sorry, folks, I don't consider screaming music. I used to like VH-1, but it seems they got rid of all the good classic acts and AAC and now it's all junk, too. Charlie Larkin
1972coronet Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 "MTV" , has been anything but what its nomenclature alludes to , in many years now. I used to enjoy it back in the 80's ; all of the so-called "Wave" music (Pet Shop Boys , Culture Club , Echo & The Bunnymen , et al.) in addition to Closet Classics (video footage from U.S. and European T.V. programmes ; Beat Club , Colour Me Pop , Top of the Pops , In Concert , et al.) . You know , the "good old days" ! Television has long been about family drama (subjective to era) , sports , etc. , etc. , but there was always an air of fun about these programmes . One of my favourite "oldies" is The Jack Benny Show ! Hilarious without resorting to "off-colour" humour , while maintaining self-deprecation , and , one of my favourite aspects , every character was treated equally and without being condescending ! Benny was a true visionary , to say the least . At a time when "coloured folks" were type-cast in moronic , subservient roles , "Rochester" was actually portrayed as being *superior* to Benny ! He was treated as an equal , both on and off air. The Monkees is an all-time fave . Even "MTV" aired the show back in the Summer of 1986 ! At least The Monkees was / is music-related ... unlike "The 'Real' World" and its ilk ! I also enjoy stupid humour . Family Guy , American Dad , Cleveland Show , Seinfeld (which , in actuality , was brilliant in its writing and structure) ,Three Stooges , etc. , etc. are stupid enough to be laughter-inducing , which is excellent stress release after a long day at work . COPS , which is thee premiere "reality show" , is just plain entertaining . I especially enjoy its pre-1996 era . My dad watches a few --too many in my mind-- of those dreadful programmes ; Hard Core Pawn ( it's okay , I suppose , other than the painfully-obvious "scripted" segments via "baiting" customers , etc.) , whatever that one in Las Vegas is ; someother "Pawn Shop" show ... Well , you get the point . I do agree with the original post , and those whom have followed suit ; too many retarded-beyond-belief "reality" shows , chock full of stupid pranks and drama , just to fill space between the numerous commercials .
Baugher Garage Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Rockford Files ... my dad watched that when I was a kid - now it's on Netflix. Lots of cool cars from the 60s and 70s.
bobthehobbyguy Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 Its been a week since I cut Dish and I have to say I haven't missed it. There are shows that I will miss but I am looking into finding cheaper options for my programming. Already found out that I can see Nova episodes for free online. I realized a while back that things were going downhill when the sci fi channel started WWE wrestling on Fridays nights. I feel that this spiral down for the programming is only to continue to get worse and the commercial breaks get longer due to the greed of the networks. Hey if they are doing lower cost programming and selling more commercial time then it should cost less not more.
cobraman Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Watched several shows on ME TV when we had Cox cable. Switched to Direct TV and they don't offer it. : (
Quick GMC Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 If you're using Netflix, check out a show called Lillehammer. It's Steven Van Zandt from the Sopranos. Great show. Netflix exclusive.
2000-cvpi Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Another vote for Longmire, it's a good show with very good actors. But there is a lot of worthless shows out there.
scummy Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 (edited) Reality tv survives because there is no shortage of brain dead mulletts watching them , the rattings show that is what we want to watch . There is panic here in oz at the moment as there are more people starting to watch you tube than tv . We have a series at the moment here called puberty blues , it's about growing up in the 70's with the surfing scene and the kids versing the adults with a great soundtrack . The rattings for this show is huge as well as the new series called love child , which is a look at how it was frowned upon to get pregnant in the 60's underaged ,so they sent the girls away so the family could save face .. But they just don't see the writting on the wall ,they just keep feeding the mulletts loads of rubbish , and if you notice it's ALL just people being NASTY to each other , and they wonder why society is beating itself to death . Ace-Garageguy Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 There's a huge amount of top-quality programming available on youtube. BBC dramas, well written British, Irish and Australian mysteries and cop shows, political satire, comedy, and documentaries about everything from science and history to racing and aviation. There is also a wide variety of American and British film available, including one of my own favorite genres, film noir. For you really smart guys, there is a large amount of foreign-language programming. It takes a little digging to find, but the results are worth it...to me anyway. And mostly entirely without intrusive, screaming commercials.
southpier Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 but for 80 or 100 bucks a month, how much more could someone buy and have something tangible, not to mention more time, at the end of the year?
