pharoah Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Here's my latest rebuild. It's another one I bought from *bay and redid. This is the original 1963(?) version. This one came apart pretty easy except for the engine. I left it on the chassis because I didn't want to break the fragile motor mounts. I had to do a little body work on the passenger's side. it looked like when they were building it,they had the body and interior shell upside down, and someone spilled a bottle of Testor's liquid glue down the inside. The plastic was puffed up and I broke the top edge of the body getting the interior out. I sprayed it Tamiya orange which is close to the original color plastic. I'm not a big fan of cycle fenders, but they always showed up on the old pictures of these,.
blackbeard Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 looks great with the orange on it I do agree with you there is no place for motor cycle fenders on cars
MrObsessive Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 (edited) I'm not normally a street rod guy, but I do have the original kit of this----and yes, I DO like cycle fenders! Very nice and clean job you did on this! Edited March 15, 2014 by MrObsessive
Harry P. Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 I agree with Bill... the fenders look good on this car. And I love that old Flintstones-era "car phone!" The only problem is that the shift knob is the size of a softball! You had to have some really big hands to grab hold of that thing!
Sixties Sam Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Very nice tub! The orange looks good. The cycle fenders look good to me. Sam
pharoah Posted March 15, 2014 Author Posted March 15, 2014 Thanks guys! From what I've read, you don't want to be behind an open wheel hot rod on the highway They can kick up rocks. The cycle fender help out there. I'm still not crazy about them.
bobthehobbyguy Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 One solution for the cycle fenders was to paint them black so they blended in with the tires.
astroracer Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Harry, the shift knob is a "skull"... Any of my friends with real cars and shifters like that don't even grab the "knob" to shift. They grab the lever about half way up. Mark
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Great model. I love these old big rod kits, and I like the cycle fenders too. Just in case anyone doesn't know, the cycle fender thing was originally a way of coping with California's for-a-while requirement that cars over 1500 pounds had to have fenders, but lighter vehicles were exempt. Go figure. Cycle-style fenders were the most minimal units that could qualify under the then-law.
