Ron Hamilton Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 I have not built a contemporary model in quite a while. I like these cars, but the kit needs a little work, but I think I am up to the task. I've addressed the sink marks, and lined everything up. It seems that AMT engraved a few too many moulding lines around the windshield, so I have to eliminate them before I prime the car. I am hoping the weather warms up, so that I can lay down some primer.
slusher Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 That is one AMT kit I almost bought but didn't. Looking forward to your build of it Ron...
cobraman Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 A guy in my neighborhood has a flat black one with shaved door handles and a huffer sticking through the hood.
horsepower Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 You're going to find out that some Chinese tool maker knows nothing about automobiles,as they have the exhaust manifolds coming out of the block instead of the heads. Not to hard to fix, on mine the exhaust pipes didn't need to be adjusted in length even though the manifolds are a little higher after the repair. Also on mine it took a little sanding to make the hood fit & have enough clearance for paint build up.
Mopar - D Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Ron what a surprise build for you. What colors are you going for.
72 Charger Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Should be realy good .Ive wanted one of these . I will be watching with interest
Deathgoblin Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Got one of these, and I'd like to see a buildup. I'll keep watching.
Ridge Rider Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 I also have one one in the to build pile and will be watching and hopefully learnig.
Deathgoblin Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 I've thought seriously about making a casting of the engine from the Revell Challenger or Dodge Magnum to have a little more correct engine. The one in this kit looked a little funny to me.
Ron Hamilton Posted March 19, 2014 Author Posted March 19, 2014 Ron what a surprise build for you. What colors are you going for. My first choice ia Magnsium Pearl, with the Gray Leather, but more than likely it will be Black, with the gray interior, as that is what I have. I am going to do my '55 and '57 in Black too.

The one in this kit looked a little funny to me. I agree with you concerning the strange engine, but at this point, being that it's not a contest model, and most of it being covered up and painted, as long as it fits, I am not going to sweat it.
mrmike Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I built one of these several years ago switching out the wheels and tires for a set of aftermarket five-spokes and tires along with changing the grille for an Bentley style grille and adding a subtle ducktail spoiler to the rear deck. Watch for the fit of the front and rear bumpers as I had problems getting them to fit correctly with the chassis installed. It kept the nose and rear from fitting properly.

Thanks for the heads up Mike. I did a lot of massaging and blocking of the bumpers to make them fit better to the body. I still have to block the body before I put some primer on it.
mrmike Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I think the issue may be with the chassis itself, especially at the front. I would like to suggest that you test fit, test fit, test fit!
Ron Hamilton Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 I think the issue may be with the chassis itself, especially at the front. I would like to suggest that you test fit, test fit, test fit! Looking at the chassis, I am going to so a little trimming on the wheelhousings on the chassis, as I want the body to just drop on it. The body looks a little soft to me out of the box. I have been looking at several one to one 300's of this generation for the various details. I have a Testors Charger R/T, which is also mocked up, and a couple of unbuilt Revell Magmums I want to compare it to. I am halfway tempted to turn it into a SRT8, as I have a couple of Magmums for the wheels and powertrains. I am not happy with the way AMT handled the body side mouldings. I am going to de-chrome them, and fit them to the body better than the kit engineering. I'll take pictures of it at the next stage.
Mopar - D Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Ron the front grill on the SRT8 is different than the 300C and the wheels
Ron Hamilton Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Ron the front grill on the SRT8 is different than the 300C and the wheels I was the inventory manager at a Chrysler dealer in the mid 2000's, and I am familiar with the car. The Magmum has a set of SRT Wheels, and the rest of the changes (i.e bumpers, etc.) I can accomplish. For the grille, I was thinking of a crosshatch mesh grille. I oogled a black SRT8 we had in inventory.
afx Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 A mesh grill would look great Ron. It's warm enough today. Hope you get your primer down.
