Good 1973 mustang kit

For my dad's birthday I want to build him a good replica of his first car a red 1973 mach 1 with a black vinayl roof

Unless you buy an original AMT or MPC kit from 1973, consider buying the AMT/ERTL '71 Boss 351 Mustang kit. It says 1971, but it is a 1973 which is the last version MPC made. Not too expensive either.

AMT ruined their 1973 Mustang when the converted it into a Warren Tope race car. Almost no stock parts left. The box indicates it might be built a stock '73, but that is impossible without getting some vintage (40 year old kit and/or parts) to do it. No stock interior, wheels, exhaust or body details.

The location of the turn front turn signals is wrong on the AMT/ERTL '71 Boss 351 Mustang kit. The MPC Boss 1971 also has the wrong lights. It maybe not be to hard to relocate them to the proper spot Do want Mach or a standard version ?

I had a 73 hardtop red with black vinyl top back in the day but it had a six in it.

I have a AMT PK 4167 73 Mach I with a bent top and no motor. I just bought it for parts it has the correct grill.if you end up needing one and it will fit what ever you buy let me know and you can have it

The boss 351 also has the wrong bumper. It has the plastic painted bumper but all boss 351s had the chrome front bumper

This kit shows the 71-72 style grille and turn signals, but it actually has the correct 73 grille and signals. This is the one I'd pick. There are a few on ebay right now for not a lot of money.

looks like a good kit as long as the big hood scoop is separate

Ford used the chrome bumper up until 1972 then due to federal safety mandates all 73 Mustangs had the composite bumpers

Yes that big scoop is separate. It's your typical MPC early 70s kit, but its a 73 inside even though the box art shows the earlier grille and turn signals. It also has a nice 25th scale set of Mustang wheel covers. Same wheel covers that's in the Revell 70 Mach 1, only an 25th scale.

This kit is the exact same kit as the one Jeff posted. It's just in a different box under the AMT ERTL name. It has the '73 grille also. You can usually find these pretty cheap.

The 71-73's did not have vents in the rear of the hood so those should be filled in. Both the MPC and AMT kits are promos with lame engines (302 or a Boss 429) instead of having a 351C or 429 CJ engine. However, you can still build a decent model with Keith Marks decals and mixing and matching parts from various versions of the kits.
